|
|
Hi
I have been asked to plan and schedule a concert which will last 1.5h.
Contractor wants pop/jazzy ( read catchy ) tunes.
We are 2 trumpets, 1 bone, 1 sax, 1 female singer and rhythm.
Ever done this before ? What could be a cool set list ?
And second question : where can I ge tthe charts ?
Thanks

I have no idea what your book looks like, but in the wedding band I play with, we get by far the most mileage out of Motown, disco, and 80s classic rock, and there are horn lines galore in most of that stuff.
Some tunes we do that always seem to hit pretty well:
Same old Song (sugar pie, honey bunch)
Shotgun
Devil w/a Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly
It's Your Thing
Get Ready
Gimme Some Loving
Mustang Sally (yes - musicians hate it but crowds love it)
Love Shack (see: Mustang Sally)
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough
My First, My Last, My Everything
Higher and Higher
Uptight, Outa Sight
Dancing in the Streets
Ain't Too Proud To Beg
Livin' On a Prayer
Can't Help Myself
Nowhere to Run
Going to a Go-Go
Knock on Wood
I Want You Back
Blame it on the Boogie
Rescue Me
You Keep Me Hanging On
Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Best of My Love
Car Wash
Dancing Queen (no horn lines but the gals flock to the dance floor)
Get Down Tonight
Shake Your Booty
Old Time Rock and Roll
Only the Good Die Young
September
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Sweet Home Alabama (no horn lines, but people love it)
Turn the Beat Around
The Electric Slide (If I NEVER had to play this again, I'd be ok with it, but it always fills a dance floor)
etc.
Good luck. _________________ Patrick Gleason

As far as arrangements are concerned, you've got a great instrumentation for horns. Most off-the-shelf horn arrangements are for just 2 or 3 horns. And I've heard a lot of samples of what people have to offer. A lot of them suck. The voicings aren't good and I don't know who transcribed them but they had lousy ears. Some of them don't come close. In a cover band, the audience appreciates it most when the band sounds as close to the record as possible. I don't believe in this "make it your own" crap. That's just and excuse for people with lousy ears who can't pick up the subtle nuances and mimic them. If you're a cover band, then cover. If you can't cover and sound like the originals, then be an original band. I prefer to write my own transcriptions/arrangements using Finale. I also take tunes that don't have horn lines and I write my own. |

Is that your whole book/catalog? Just curious. There's no way I could post our whole list/catalog - it's literally 17 single spaced pages, 826 songs long. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Yeah, but they might want to be careful about using the song’s next line, it’s not necessarily for all audiences, especially if they’re NOT drunk.....yet....😆

Of course, there's always the Buddy Rich approach:
"If you have any requests keep them to yourself. This is my band. We play what I want to play."
Not tactful but an epic of effective communication. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

We get hired many times specifically because we have an 800+ song list and the client can cherry pick tunes for their entire night. It doesn't always work out like they hope though. Typically when that happens and clients want to "keep it classy" by putting some of the tried and true dance floor hits on the "do not play" list, halfway through the party they are pleading with us to do whatever we need to in order to put people on the dance floor because the songs they picked effectively killed the party. _________________ Patrick Gleason
