My band director turned me on to a private auction that includes several Martin horns including Committees and Dansants. Are there any special features or ranges of serial number I should be looking for?

TIA

The most desired Committees are those with serial numbers under 200,000.

Funny, I was going to say Committees falling out of that number range play just as well only to find from the list that my Committee falls in that range, LOL. Nice to know.

The Handcraft models are very sought after.
They look and play a little different than the later Committees.
I had the opportunity to chose between several #2 Commitees from different eras
Each horn played very well but I liked the Handcraft over all the others.

TT, looks as if you like King horns. My regular is a SilverSonic DB with a del Quadro valve job. I also have played a really sweet "Art Deco" Silvertone, and have had Libertys, Tempos, etc. There is a huge auction going on of J. Geils' collection , with about a dozen Committees. Two days to go and the bidding is in the thousands ...

Oh well.

Yes, I am some kind of King loyalist I guess...
Anyway these trumpets do play really great.

I just took a look at it.
They will cost a fortune as soon as the auction is going to end.

Did you already had your private auction?

The Martin Committee Handcraft from the early 40s is some kind of magical horn. So lightweight and such a creamy tone.

I know virtually nothing about how auction houses like Skinner works. What happens to all of those horns that do not seem to have moved. It looks like there were lots of lots (sorry) of potentially desirable horns that didn't go... a bunch of Martin Committees, Olds Supers, Benges, etc. That is/was a pretty hefty pile of horns.

I think the trumpets remain as 'Unsold' as long as they are actually paid.
I won the auction on the Martin Deluxe although its state is 'unsold'.
So I guess thats the way it works.

Giles bought one of my large-bore Committees, a few years ago.
I suspected he was THE "J. Giles" of Rock'n'Roll fame. Knew his dad and step-mom. We spoke several times (on the phone ... never met in-person).

Wish I'd seen this earlier... Have wanted to acquire one since everyone talks about them.

Maybe someone bought several at once? Quite a few have the same price so I would guess that is the average.

Currently the guys from gamonbrass are selling some Martin Committees.
Even a Martin Committee #3 non Deluxe
But it's a little costy...
http://gamonbrass.com/pl/offer/trumpet/Bb/233

By the way the guys from gamonbrass are awesome.
I can highly recommend them.
They have a huge collection of vintage trumpets.
King, Martin, Olds, Conn, Bach, Selmer, Holton, Benge just anything you're looking for.
But also some newer trumpets á la Adams, Yamaha, Schilke, Kanstul.
It's amazing I've never seen so many sought after trumpets at one place.
That's also the place I got my Martin Handcraft Committee.

I have a couple of Committees that I'm going to put on the market-a '47 Standard and a '54 Deluxe, but #2 bores and with Reeves PVAs. Both are raw brass and in gig ready condition-I've used both on gigs up until recently. If anyone is interested send me a PM :)

Hope it worked out for you! I've only played one Committee. Sound and felt great but had very wide slots. Intonation would take getting used to.

Well I bid on about six horns but dropped out when it got too rich for me. The Committees I bid on were sold between $1800 and $2800. I thought I could get one and see what the fuss was all about, then sell and make a few bucks. But the instruments sold at full market value.

I think you should aim for a Martin Committee pre RMC era (1961 or 1962). They all have played too similarly for me to tell the tonal difference between years.

People say they have bad intonation, that is not the case. They're most likely not used to the way the horn slots, you can't approach the horn too fast the moment you first pick it up. Give the horn a week and you will surely adjust to the way it carries the sound.

Martin Handcraft Imperials are also very great horns for a much lower price. They predate the Committees and were still made when the Handcraft Committee was introduced in the very early 40s. The ones with the "M" stamping between the engraved Lion's Paws should have the same or very similar bell size and bell flare profile of the HC Committees and Committees.
They have slightly tighter slots like the HC Committee and have a excellent pitch with a smooth dark sound as well.

King Golden Flair plays somewhat similar to the medium bore Martins.
