After a tragic cruise line accident, you and your favorite trumpet wash up on a deserted island in the south Pacific. For five long years you are totally alone. You learn to forage and build and survive. (You will live on this island totally alone for another 15 years before being rescued by the Hawaiian Tropic bikini team ... but we're getting ahead of ourselves.) One day a magic crate washes up on shore and inside is a solar powered CD player and the complete discographies of three trumpet players. Who are they and why?

Miles because of different eras and his ever evolving projects.

Kehulani, that's only one. You have two more to go. Rules are rules.

I'll go too. It's only fair.

1. Donald Byrd ... because his is the sound I'm after.

2. Kenny Dorham ... because expression is even more important than sound (to me).

3. Herb Alpert ... because I grew up listening to my dad's TJB albums and I still enjoy the hell out of them. Also the album covers; its a deserted island after all.

Bix Beiderbecke. He took what Pop's did and somewhat lyricized it.

Can I have that Hawaiian Tropic bikini team count as the third?

I've already got a trumpet, why would I listen to more trumpet? Seriously.

I guess, if forced I'd go with:

Louie Armstrong
Maurice Andre
Bud Herseth

If I could have a live trumpet player, it would be Arturo Sandoval. He can play anything. I love his phrasing, his sound, his creativity and his musicality. Not only that, but he would be great company.

However, if we are talking about recordings, well that's a different story. Louis has recorded enough things to last a long time. I can listen to him all day long. I'd throw in Maurice Andre because I love Baroque music. Bud Herseth would round out the classical genre - but I wouldn't survive very long for lack of big band music and be bop.

I sure would miss so many great artists: Bix, Diz, Chet, Miles, Freddie, Clark, Art, Maynard, Doc, Arturo, Herb, Wayne, Carl Saunders, Shaye Cohn, Phil Smith, Roy Hargrove, Trent Austin, Alison Balsom, the list goes on and on...

Warm regards,
Grits

Too back a speaker or headphones didn't magically show up so you could hear the CDs playing.
