- Im honestly not sure Malcolm has a limit on his upper register (just listen to his Tchaikovsky concerto recording) I’ve personally heard E above double C come out of his bell during lessons and the man can play anything |
At first I though "Did Tchaikovsky write a trumpet concerto?" Then I search for it. I've heard the violin concerto in D many times, but never like this:

The highest written notes in popular pieces that I am aware of are the concert F in Bach's 2nd Brandenburg Concerto and the concert Eb in Mahler's 8th Symphony, both directly above high C. I would play them on Bb piccolo and Bb or Eb respectively. Tonguing a high F on Bb is more comfortable than tonguing an Eb on C. I have never practiced it on an Eb trumpet but I imagine playing it as a high C would be choice. _________________ 1981 Bb Bach Stradivarius 37/25 ML raw - Laskey 60C

Another term for a stove is "range."
We've seen arguments from both sides stating what different opinions are and specific examples that seem to refute each others' ideas.
While a strong high range is inevitable with proper technique and good fitness as a player, in the end it doesn't really matter what the range of principal players is since so few players will ever sit in the principal chair.
I think he was trying to add a little levity to the situation. _________________ -Tom Hall-

Well, I'm not principal trumpet of a major orchestra so... my range is smaller. _________________ Richard Sandals

I'd say a golf range. To relax after all the pressure of not cracking a single note! |
