It's been years since I have been active on this site. Am a multi-instrumentalist ... sooo, other musical interests have beckoned ....

However; I still play the horns. Hence; my interest in horn-related gear.

Which brings me to my query ....

What is Botti's "backline" / (sound-reinforcement rig) ? NOT his horn and mouthpiece ... but, his mic ... amplification ... effects (reverb? compressor? attenuator? speakers? delay? etc.?), and so-forth.

Disappointing that NO ONE here can respond.

Lotsa "gear-heads" here on this site ... but, apparently, none that know the information I seek.

Oh, well ....

I suggest you contact his management and ask them for information. Here's the link.

Also, here's an interview about his use of Shure microphones:

It's not a "back line"; that refers to drumsets and guitar amplifiers.

As for his microphone, he used a Shure Beta 98H/C microphone for his television concert with the Boston Pops several years ago. I've also seen video of him using an SD Systems LCM77. He probably does not tour with his own speakers; most likely they are contracted for each location.

When I spoke with him regarding this he said..."Just enough reverb and no delay." His reverb sounds like "plates" reverb to MY ears. I hope this helps.😁

He's certainly not bringing a plate reverb on tour with him. Modern digital reverb units can sound extremely close to old-time plates, with the added benefit that they're portable.

He says he doesn't want a lot of reverb, but to my ears, he uses way too much reverb. It's all a matter of taste.

I heard him play the intro to Embraceable You up close at The Blue Note in New York when his mic was not on. His sound does not need much reverb. As for the plates reverb...no doubt the plates are replicated with modern electronic equipment. I have a small effects box attached to my wireless mic with a few settings for reverb; one says "plates".

"Sorry, Charlie".

I've played in almost every conceivable musical context, aside from show and ballet pits.

It is common to refer to anything NOT ON STAGE, or at "the board" ... as "backline" ... all / most sound-reinforcement gear.

Call it what you wish ....

... as I shall do.

As the term is used by sound and music professionals all across North America, "backline" equipment is, by definition, ON the stage. Any equipment that's offstage, and any microphones used by performers in the front line (downstage), is by definition, NOT backline equipment. Of course, you can use the term as you see fit, but you should probably avoid signing (or specifying) any technical riders!

How about we focus on my post-topic, rather than nuances and semantics of technical terms ?

He uses a Bricasti M7 reverb. And the previously mentioned Beta 98 wireless. And he uses the speakers at the venu. I’ve sat in a room with him and played many many times and the reverb has nothing to with the tone of his horn. He sounds great regardless. It simply puts it in the right acoustic space for whatever venue he is playing.
