|
|
Hello! I'm getting back into playing (stopped 12 years ago after high school) and looking for some new books. I remember spending many hours getting better by playing Clarke exercises and the like, but I'd like to sort-of "jump start" my interest in playing again by getting some books that have exercises with some musicality/fun to play. Any recommendations? |

If you're interested in jazz-oriented exercises, Rich Willey's The Melody Lingers On is fun and not technically or range-extended challenging.
Also, there are the Concone studies. "Classically" oriented, not technical, but good melodically oriented. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll take a look at them. |

By Blazhevitch, similar stylistically to the Brandt book _________________ In his retirement he had become that most dreaded of former athletes, the one who always remembered how much harder it was in his day "when ships were made of wood and men were made of steel."

A few suggestions:
First Book of Practical Studies, Getchell/Hovey
100 Progressive Lessons, Hickman (each lesson has a famous melody)
Duhem 81 Melodious Etudes, qPress
Vizzutti Trumpet Method Melodic Studies (book 3) the duets are good too
Concone Lyrical Studies, Sawyer
Bordogni Melodious Etudes, Clark/O'Loughlin
Arban Method, Art of Phrasing, and the duets
Franquin Method, Melodic Recreations.
BTW, Hal Leonard publishes a Fake Book with over 1200 tunes. I think it's fun to open that book at random and play some tune I've never heard of. There are some gems in there. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

I have been revisiting the Sigmund Herring etude and excerpt books. They contain a lot of fairly challenging (to me, anyway) material and provide a good all-around workout. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

I always remind people about the Art of Phrasing section in Arban and encourage them to perform as if they were singing.
Snedecor's Lyrical Studies is a wonderful collection, I've even used some for performing in my student's studio recitals. Again, do more than play the notes.
Getschell, especially Book 2.
Selected Studies for Cornet and Trumpet, Rubank, compiled Voman has some etudes in every key that would fit your plan.
Honestly, just about everything we attempt should be played musically and with thought to sell it to anyone within earshot. Everyone plays the notes and rhythms correctly, be the one who makes music. Good luck! |
