I do both. I have found that being versatility is important to survive in this business. Learn to do whatever the job calls for and do it to the best of your ability.

I think especially Pete Candoli was known for lead playing. I'm in no way criticizing, but I always thought of Conte more as a soloist and Pete more as a lead player. Of course, they had the skills to do both!

Question about the Condoli brothers.

I've always been a fan of them both. But I see them listed here as "lead" players and I don't identify them with any lead playing (save playing lead in combos).

Can anybody recommend any large ensemble groups where the Condolis are playing lead? Thanks.

The Tonight Show band with Doc Severinsen- Conte Condoli played split lead with John Audino

I'm not sure how we can verify this, but I'm pretty sure that Snooky
Young played second and split lead with John Audino.
I never really thought of Conte Candoli as a lead trumpet player,
I always thought he was considered more of a jazz player,
and rightfully so.
If someone could provide some recorded examples of Conte Candoli
listed is playing lead, that would be interesting.
As far as Pete Candoli is concerned, he played lead with Sonny Dunham,
Tommy Dorsey, and Woody Herman and other bands back in the forties.
He also played with Stan kenton's band, although I'm not sure if he
played lead or not with Kenton.
And for many years, Pete Candoli played lead trumpet on literally
thousands of record dates in the Los Angeles studios.
In fact, Pete Candoli is responsible for getting his younger brother
Conti on Woody Herman's band, playing the Jazz chair.

This was my thought in reading this thread. Conte was more of the pure post-bop jazz soloist and Pete was primarily a lead player who could solo competently when called upon. I can't think of a recording I've heard where Conte would have been leading a full section.
