Phil Smith listens to and discusses excerpts featuring past principal trumpets of the New York Philharmonic. Interesting and inspiring.

Very interesting. Thank you.
I'm curious if anyone knows exactly which specific recording of Mahler 3 with Bernstein conducting and John Ware paying the posthorn solo is being used in this podcast?
Looking online, I see what is either several different recordings, or the same recording with different cover art. I'd like to have that full recording. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Itīs the Columbia 1961 recording, now on Sony CD.There is a second,1987 recording on DG,but i think Phil Smith played the Posthorn solo on this newer one. |

There is also a 1976 radio broadcast that was issued in the NYP Mahler Boxset that could be being used. Gerard Schwarz played principal on stage but John Ware plays the posthorn solo. |

I had heard John Ware did posthorn on both of those recordings, but could be mistaken. Perhaps someone who knows for certain will comment. _________________ (List horns here) |

I just checked my CD liner notes for the Bernstein DG recording in 1987. Phil Smith played the posthorn on that one. |
