Check your local cable news for more details. However I have it from reliable sources that our recent rains which drenched SoCal burned areas have caused catastrophic mudslides.

I had just been travelling through the region during the past week. Both my female partner and myself starring at the endless remains of brushfires but with only one thought on our minds,

"What's gonna happen to the hills after our winter rains finally come? We didnt need wait long for the answer.

Yes it even rains in Southern California. Albert Hammond's sappy 1971 tune excepted. And when it rains? It pours. I'm told that for the next few days the only way in or out of Santa Barbara ("S/B" for short) is via ferry. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those friends and families of people who've lost their lives.

If one doesn't have cable one can always scan the internet.

According to google maps, Santa Barbara is accessible from the north, but from around Milpas street in Santa Barbara to Ventura, 101 is closed.

It's pretty sad what the people in the area are going through.

Tough deal. Sad.

Do they have any kind of comprehensive land-use / conservation program ?

Uh- I think the one that is already in place is the primary cause of CA's out-of-control wildfires.

I heard on NPR yesterday that clearing the main highway will take some time because they will be manually checking the mud for bodies before they remove the mud.

I wish them all well- that is some of the most naturally-beautiful land in the US. I'm sure that clearing mud and debris is also a hazardous gig for the workers. Can't pay them enough. Back here in flyover, I can remember 2 tremendous blizzards that took down power lines. Cold, below zero with high winds and these poor power company guys from many surrounding states out there, up in buckets trying to restore power. Want to talk about some heroes...
