I have a question about jazz trumpet sounds. To me the trumpet sounds brittle in this recording. Is that a goal for the style of jazz? I've heard it from others and even Wynton when he is doing a certain style of songs. Do you do something to get that sound? What role does the A2 have to get there? Does that add to the excitement of the song? _________________ Richard

Trent, that sounds great. I think it's fantastic to see Adams come out with an all-around multi-purpose design like the A2.
Is this the lacquer version with the .40 yellow-brass bell listed on your website? What kind of mouthpiece did you use with it in this recording? (I also listened to the video you posted on your website of a new A2 in silver plate with a .50 yellow-brass bell, played with a 1C-ish mpc.)
Thanks! _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

This is the .40 that is listed on the web store (I might pull the listing although Adams is making me another one... same configuration in case someone buys this one... they are that good).
On the recording I'm using an ACB 10.5 in acrylic (top) with a heavy O backbore, 25 throat. I switch mouthpieces like I do socks (probably not a good thing...). Been digging playing a smaller diameter lately.
This is the first mix and I think the finished album sound will be a lot better.

Glad to hear you play some outside stuff Trentster! Yeah, that horn is a wonderful sound.. The classic jazz trumpet sound of today that I expect and really dig.. Hey, and you did it on a 'non-bathtub' piece! (Ok, just messin w you Seriously though, I'll definitely buy the album when it comes out with lines from you like that.. Let us know..
p.s. - I was playing that .610 diameter V trumpet top you made me awhile back with a cornet backbore in my flugel on Friday night as things were getting loud, but not enough for my custom MF3 flugel piece.. That V cup cuts through without getting too bright. Plus I play the best jazz flugel ever made (Well, maybe that Ack Van Royen Hub V Laar would give it a run for its money) that I got from you as well..my Manchester Brass Pro _________________ Mpcs: Jim New-Manley Jazz1/Jazz2/Jazz4/Lead3. Hey Trent, do you find acrylic to be warmer and 'fluffier' as compared to a brass top with exactly the same specs? _________________ Mpcs: Jim New-Manley Jazz1/Jazz2/Jazz4/Lead3. Legends MF1. Reeves 39EX/HV. Frost 39MVD. Flugel: Jim NewMF3. Jim New-Manley F1+F2. Pickett MF. Reeves HF.

Thanks for this info. I like the sound of this instrument. I felt like I was hearing a more resonant edge, for lack of a better term, compared to the smoother sound of the silver .50 in the youtube video. (One day I hope to find words adequate to describe sound—still lookin'!) I like that resonance; I bet it would sound great on a wide variety of musical styles.
No complaints from me on this recording. Your playing sounds great, and the recording seems to give a clear example of the character of this horn's sound.

Very good solo, Trent! Enjoyed it. Play whatever horn you like, right?

A few years ago, at Trent's table at the NTC, I tried an Adams horn (I think it was the Frank Greene model, a Benge clone). I was quite surprised by how well it played. Those Adams horns are worth a look, for sure. |

That one was the A5, which IMO is a bit of Benge, Calicchio, and Besson IMO. Killer commercial horn but also quite nice for jazz and brass quintet work as well.
Cheers,
