Exercise 2 - slurred seconds up to high range - played twice with 15 minutes in between -- How many times a day should/might I practice this exercise- - just once a day (with the repeat after 15 minutes or so), or would it be beneficial to do it a couple or three times a day, well spaced? What did Caruso and/or Frink suggest? What do you recommend if you are an experienced Caruso player? thanks - Dan

Once a day is all that is needed. One time through with the second blow 10 - 12 seconds after the first blow. Try not to be "result conscious" as CC would say. Remember that the Caruso calisthenics are not music exercises. They are intended to help you prepare to play music. To think of them as music or a measure of progress in music can be unnecessarily self defeating.

Carmine never had me do any of his exercises more than once per day. Even at the peak of my study, my CC calisthenics routine was never more than an 1.5 hours per day, leaving plenty of hours to work on other kinds of exercises and to get to a lot of musical practice.

Dan,

I think of the intervals as powerful medicine. I think Mr. Caruso suggested that when I asked too many questions. Paraphrasing: ..."do you have to think about an aspirin when you take a pill?"

I agree with the other posters regarding a double dose of the intervals.

Powerful medicine this Caruso stuff!

Best of luck,

Gordon Stump
