What is your area of focus - orchestral, soloist, jazz, lead player? How long have you been playing?

Where is the Mid-west? Do you mean all, or are there a few specific states you are interested in?

Great Schools:
U. of Mich. is a 12 hr. drive from Sioux Falls
Northwestern is an 8 hr. drive from Sioux Falls
Indiana U.
U. of Cincinnati Conservatory (probably not NCAA)
Oberlin (not NCAA)

How close? And to what? SD is a big state.
What do you want to study? Performance, jazz, classical, education, etc.
Are you the type of player who can get in to any school you want?

Other Options:
U. of Denver
North Central U. in Minneapolis
MN State U.
Any of the other Big Ten
Union College, Lincoln NE
U. of Neb. in Omaha

Try searching TH a bit. There are a LOT of "Which School is Perfect for Me?" threads. The search function can be a bit of a nuisance but snooping around will be worth the effort. There is a lot of school-related material here on TH; maybe not quite as much as say as "What horn should I buy?" or "Will this mouthpiece turn me into Maynard?" but certainly enough threads to help you with your research.

Folks will be able to help you more if you can answer some of the questions that have already been asked.

At the risk of sounding like a dad asking a foolish question, what year in school are you? Hopefully you are an underclassman and not a senior.

Others have asked what your goals are, but to just cover the bases in Michigan:

University of Michigan (Bill Campbell) and Michigan State University (Justin Emerich) are the largest NCAA schools with good music programs and are in the Big 10. Western Michigan (Scott Thornburg, Robert White) would be next on the list of great Michigan music programs with excellent trumpet teachers. They are NCAA, but in the MAC.

I haven't met Justin Emerich, but I went to Michigan and studied with Bill Campbell, and know both Scott and Bob. All are great players and excellent teachers, as I am sure Justin Emerich is too.

Pretty vague questions without knowing his goals.

If he wants to become a teacher, and get an education degree, that’s one thing.

If he wants to pursue a life at trumpet performance that’s another animal. And the field of performance also is important.

For me and my experiences, I think you can get the same education no matter where you go. So I’d rather go somewhere I can afford, or better get a scholarship instead of being in debt 10s of thousands of dollars while holding a degree and not being able to find employment.

The best part about going to college for a performance degree is the networking you get to do. Which is why so many end up spending a ton of cash and move to NYC for school.

And there are countless who carve out a good career of trumpet performance with out ever taking a class at a college or university.

As our small industry gets smaller and more competitive and even though I have a passion for trumpet and music, if to do all over again, I’d have been better off studying business or economics, or even safer, find some field where I can get a government paycheck. Those guys never lose their jobs and have the best benefits and retirement plans.

Maybe U of Illinois? Charlie Daval and Ron Romm both teach there. There’s a lot of performing and teaching experience between the two.
