Anyone got a reliable resource to identify the lead player on this 1965 TV special (Frank Sinatra - A Man and His Music)? I have struck out searching the web...

I have a double CD reissue of the original soundtrack from this special, which was to mark Sinatra's 50th birthday.

It has the original liner notes which give extensive details on his history, but unfortunately the other artists are only listed as follows:

"An anthology of the musical career of the most exciting entertainer of our time... narrated and sung by Frank Sinatra. With the orchestras of Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins, Billy May, Sy Oliver, Basie, Ernie Freeman, Johnny Mandel, Don Costa. Plus other highlights of the Sinatra career."

I don't know how many of these orchestras were actually featured live on the show, but this may at least give you some helpful clues.

Hmmm....if that's this recording:

Then that appears to be a compilation that predates the special...?

Yes - I think you guys are right. I always assumed the recordings were taken from the TV special as I knew they were different from the original recordings. Nevertheless, perhaps they did use some of the personnel from these record dates on the show.
