Al Hirt's Horn A Plenty album was the first trumpet album I ever heard and my introduction to Al Hirt. Been listening to this since I was a kid - it remains one of my favorite albums to listen to of any genre.

There's this funny thing that happens at the end of the 6th track "Margie". As Al is doing the ascending lick there's this "woosh" sound of air under pressure. My assumption is it was something to do with him fluffing the lick and the engineer doing a punch-in but somehow a remnant got left behind of Al airballing the high notes on a previous take.

What do you think it is? The link goes to just before the issue in question. It should be pretty obvious what I'm talking about.

Sounds like a second player "kissing" into the horn.

Hmm. So you think it might be a deliberate effect. I've heard recordings of Al doing a mouthpiece kiss but that sure seems like an odd place for it.

What an amazing album.

It's always seemed such a puzzler how he could display the incredible command of the horn he did on this album in every way - yet he struggled with the Haydn Concerto around the same time.
