Looking for recommendations for a mpc that would fall between a Bach 3C and3D. On my short list of pieces to try are : Monette 4 silver series, B4S/S2, Schilke 14B, Curry 3*, GR66MS, Marcink. BOB findley, .. Marcink 300 series....
This would be for lead and commercial work. Thanks for any input with your experiences.

Recently tried a Warburton 4M with both a 7 and a 11 backbore. Dont know the specs, but felt like somthing between a C and D cup.
Great mouthpiece.

Austin Custom Brass TA-2. Perfect diameter that you're looking for, and, for me, shallow enough to make upper register playing much easier but not too shallow that lower stuff sounds bad. Great commercial piece.

My roommate does far more lead/commercial stuff around town than I do, and he plays the Monette 4 silver series, and he really quite likes it.

Bob Reeves 43C.

Slightly shallower than a 3C and just tiny bit smaller in terms of cup diameter, though because the rim is a little wider than a 3C's, the outer rim diameter is about the same or maybe slightly larger than that of a 3C.

The more pertinent stuff:

Amazingly efficient.

In lower and middle registers, nice and warm sounding (nicer than a 3C).

In the upper register, physically easier to play the high notes, with a nice and bright, bigger, stronger sound than a 3C.

I hope this proves helpful to you.

Best wishes,

John Mohan

I'd recommend trying a Curry 3ZM (marked 3M on the mouthpiece) as well as the 3*. The M cup is (I believe) a slightly shallower C cup and will feel completely familiar to a 3C player. The * cup is great as well, but a slightly different sound and feel.

Pickett has exactly that. The 3CD. Its got the comfortable 3 rim with a cup with slightly less volume at the bottom of the cup than a C cup. A slightly more aggressive entrance to the throat. I had the opportunity to play on one at the KMEA convention last month. It was fabulous. a great jazz/pops mouthpiece, depending on the backbore you choose.

A Pickett 3CD has a larger cup diameter than a Bach 3C. A Bach 3D is equivalent to a Pickett 7D. That is if I understand his comparator correctly.

The comparator seems to be completely off when it comes to Pickett stuff. A more accurate 3C Bach diameter piece in Pickett's stuff would either be their 5 (for a larger than average 3C) or a 6 (more of the smaller 3C variety). I know this to be true from personal experience. A pickett 3C is more like a Bach 2C-1.5C.

Honestly, I'd give the Warburton 4M a try. It's about in between a 3C and 3D depth. very easy to play mouthpiece, in all registers of the horn. Just ordered a 5M, as I found the Warburton 6M to be a touch too small diameter wise and the 4M to be a touch too big for me personally.

The Marcinkiewicz E3/3C is a shallow 3C mouthpiece.

How much shallower is the E3/3C than the Bach 3C? Like Bach 3D shallow?

The Horn Trader makes a piece just like that. A little shallower than a regular 3C.

John's already suggested the Reeves 43C which is a great shout (I'd include the 42C too).

I'll throw in my other recommendation - James R New S4MS.

The S4M is like a sensible 3C, the S4MS is brighter and more supportive but designed in such a way that it gives plenty of chop room - plenty of zip without being too shallow - it's a real killer piece.
