Hi,

I play an H2 size ACB mouthpiece in vintage blank, which looks like this:

It has a MO (medium open?) backbore and a 23 drill (I guess). It's based on a Vintage Gustat Heim.

I had a chance to try a few different ACB mouthpieces in different blanks, such as the modern, standard and vintage, and aside from the obvious weight difference, each blank works in a very specific way.

I like the vintage blank a lot, just because it matches my horn and also the way I play.

So, if you play an ACB mouthpiece in vintage blank, what rim size do you have in it?
Do you use it as your main mouthpiece?
What trumpet do you play with this mouthpiece?
I'm just curious.

Let's get a little more specific...
What's the gap you have with this particular blank? I get a very small gap but resistance feels better than every other mouthpiece I played before... and I tried other ACB mouthpieces in different blanks but with the same backbore. They felt completely different.

Well, I only get this gap with this particular blank. So I guess the way the blank is designed definitely has something to do with it. I know the correct test should be done with the same exact mouthpiece, in all blank styles, in order to confirm that, still...

Have you experienced that with your mouthpiece?

Thanks!

Just FYI, the blank shape was standard fare for Holton pieces in the 60's. I have a Holton "Galaxy" model mouthpiece with this exact blank style.

On my Galaxy, the shank appears to be slightly less wide than a standard modern Bach shank, so I get less gap with it. My Galaxy is like a 7C with the roundest, most gentle rim bite ever. (There is effectively NO bite you can feel). The closest rim I've felt to it would be a Maynard rim. The high point is near the outside of the rim, not in the middle, and CERTAINLY not near the cup.

There're also vintage Holton Blanks which are Skeletonized in the 50's, and also Heavyweight "Al-Cass" like blanks during the 50's and 60's. I like the heavyweight blanks the best of all Holton mouthpiece designs, the 66 I play is in my sig. It's without a doubt the best sounding blank (warmest/darkest) (for me) I've ever used.

Interesting, this must be pretty new because there's no option for a vintage blank on the ACB store mouthpiece page. Looks cool, and if you get a chance, I'd look forward to your testing of the other blanks to see how it compares!

Hi abundrefo,
It looks exactly the same as my vintage Holton Heim. Did you compare yours to original one?

No I did not. But now I'm pretty curious about that.
Specially after reading trumanjazzguy's comment about his mouthpiece having the "most gentle rim bite ever".

I think the bite on my "Galaxy" is like that. I doubt other mouthpieces with that blank share that same soft bite. You can find Holton Galaxy mouthpieces on ebay for between $20-75, used to brand new!

I know this is an old thread, but I just bought an MV3C in this Vintage blank. I emailed ACB to ask about the gap. They said it should gap the same as their standard blank, assuming your piece has not been worn down or damaged etc.

The blank is a little shorter than standard, they also said.

Looking forward to trying it when it gets here.

So what's the verdict on the MV3c?

Sorry, I forgot about this thread. It didn't really work for me, but I don't know if it was because of the blank. Austin Custom Brass mouthpieces just don't seem to work for me for some reason, I don't know what it is. It's me, not the mouthpiece. They are very it's me, not the mouthpiece. They are very well-made. But the blank was really cool, I really liked the look of it. It seemed to affect the resistance a little bit. Sorry this post is not very helpful.
