What is the thought process behind selecting a mouthpiece on an Eb/D trumpet?

Normally I play a C trumpet with a 3C mouthpiece (with a 24 throat) in our community orchestra. I rarely play a Bb.

Stay with a 3C? More shallow cup? Smaller rim? Smaller throat? What MP should I consider?

I’m sure this topic has come up before, but I just can’t find it.

I’ll hanks

I usually use my normal big horn mouthpiece and it works just fine. Depending on the demands of the work, I might use my piccolo mouthpiece instead. I used to use something in between my big horn mouthpiece and my piccolo mouthpiece and that worked well enough I guess.

You'll hanks indeed.

My thought process is that as the trumpet gets small the cup and possibly the diameter must accommodate; for tone and pitch control.

Then it depends on the D/Eb (mouthpiece must match/have a balanced relationship with the trumpet). With my large bore Bach D/Eb that has a C trumpet bell, I tend to lean toward the same setup that I use on my C; occasionally going a bit shallower if the music is daintier or range more of a challenge.

But with a straight Eb that has a smaller bore/bell, I definitely go shallower-not quite my picc mouthpiece, but in that direction.

Bb = 3C (Curry) / 3BC / 3B
C = 3C, 25 throat /3BC
D/Eb = 3C or 3M
picc = 3P
Eb Soprano Cornet (Schilke) = 3DC (British Brass Band setting)

What are you going to be using the Eb/D for? What bore size is it?

I have a Eb/D with a .459 bore. For big orchestral stuff I use my normal C trumpet mouthpiece. For small stuff (I'm playing it on Mozart's Requiem this month) I use my Bb mouthpiece because it has a smaller throat and backbore.

I don't use it enough to start an in depth mouthpiece search, but I think those two are a good starting point.

Thanks gang,

I don’t have anything specific. Mostly orchestral work.

Might do the end of Pictures in Eb. Might do Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle on D trumpet, since I don’t own a picc.

Also, I expect some Easter stuff on the D.

Hanks away!

I like William Vacchiano's advice of smaller horn, bigger backbore for a bigger sound. How big you go depends on your horn. My Eb is one of the C trumpet bell ML types, so my regular orchestra moupiece works well.

I recently purchased a 1.25cds from Austin Custom brass. The combination of shallower cup, larger throat,and "standard" backbore but shorter length was great for my Eb trumpet. I believe they make it in smaller sizes as well.

I think it depends on what you want it to sound like. Mostly, I want my E flat to sound like a big horn, so I use the same mouthpiece I use on my C trumpet. Sometimes I want it to sound more compact, so I use a smaller mouthpiece (both diameter and cup depth). So if I were using it for the end of Pictures I'd use my regular mouthpiece, but for baroque music I might consider something smaller.

The bigger back bore theory works well for me, but my Eb experience is with the local brass band-ish ensemble. The horn is an old model Yamaha (731?), mouthpiece is a Greg Black C cup, 9 back bore, with a Stork 3 rim. The tone blends, the more open back bore keeps my head from exploding, and the intonation is better than with my shallower pieces.
