Acting on the advice of a friend of mine from The Shriners Band, who looked over my recent valve spring work (i.e. as per that other thread), he recommended I gently -very gently- clean up and polish my beloved '67 Holton Collegiate.
Use #0000 steel wool along with some baby oil.
Gently... VERY GENTLY... wipe down the entire trumpet.
It won't harm the lacquer or cause scratches, streaks, smudges, cracks, etc..
It WILL brighten up the tarnished areas and non-lacquered areas after 50 years.
Wipe down with a paper towel or two.
Use a dab of Mother's car wax & polish on a fine cloth, and rub until your elbow aches!
It's still a 50 year old trumpet with a lot of lacquer loss, but look at how well the rest of it shined up!
