Hi all
Whilst looking for a new trumpet to play I have come across the Yamaha Bobby Shew models which have good reviews. I would like to ask anyone who has played these horns to also share their reviews. I have one question though; with most makes and models the reviews/people recommend silver instruments however, with these 'Bobby Shew' models the lacquer finish is highly recommended.
Please can someone explain this for me.
Thanks
Thomas
p.s. I have included a poll for your opinions |

I have talked to Bobby about this. The lacquer is preferred because you can get a warmer sound when needed. The silver plated ones seem to be too bright at times. This does not apply to most horns but in this case it seems to apply. I have played both and prefer the lacquered version myself. I have had my 8310Z since they first came out (2005? Maybe). It is my go to horn. And it gets bright enough with the right mouthpiece.

I own the silver one. I play-tested a bunch and loved this horn the most. I personally don't think finish matters all that much on a horn. I think the most important thing is what you want the horn to look like and whether you prefer taking care of silver or lacquer instruments. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

I have the earlier 6310Z in lacquer which I greatly prefer over the newer 8310Z.
I have played both lacquer and silver versions of the 8310Z and , to be perfectly honest, I couldn't really notice much difference between them -- the only thing I would say for the silver that I suspect it is a more durable finish. |

Some players seem to think that one horn is a bit darker/brighter than another based on finish. Frankly, I too have never noticed much difference. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I have come to like lacquer more because I like to leave the horn out of the case so I can just pick it up anytime. If you do this with silver, you'll need to shine it pretty often. |
