Hi,

Quick story - Long ago , when I was around 8-9 years old, a lady that lived nearby (who knew I played trumpet) used to invite me over to listen to some of her 78 records.

This tune, which I have played about 30 seconds of (not my best performance, but it gets the point across) is one that I have never been able to find. I thought it was Bunny Berigan, but I've listened to a ton of his stuff and it's not there.

Make sure your volume isn't up too loud, as this recording came through strong!

The following link points to an mp3 file:

The song starts with just the trumpet, and there's a jazzy drum fill between each break.

If anyone could name the tune, or artist, I'd really appreciate it! This tune (in parts) has stuck in my head for many years, but its been a mystery..

Thank you for reading, and listening!

This is a serious reply. . . the intro to this tune sounds like the beginning of the old "Speed Racer" cartoon show! I'm not really familiar with this head though . . . sorry. Good luck.

Speed Racer! I can see how it is similar, but the intro part isn't a solo trumpet.

I just listened to the theme to make sure, but that's not it!

Thanks for the input!

Hi There,

I listened to your performance and even though the original was on a 78 rpm recording, what you played is definitely not in the style of Bunny Berigan. Just from what I heard I'd say you listened to something from the mid to late 40's. (78 rpms were manufactured up until 1955, 56 in Canada) Try checking out the recordings of Dizzy Gillespie, Jonah Jones, or Roy Eldridge for a start.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks for giving me some direction!

I'd like to play a little more of it, but it's a pretty fast tune!
If possible I'll try to practice up and put a little longer bit up in the near future.

Hello!

A few years later, I've managed to narrow it down to Jonah Jones, (thanks Henry Fletcher!!) who plays the riff in one of his songs from the Muted Jazz album called Undecided.

This is the same riff for the most part, but the tune I remember starts with that riff, and the song is based off of that riff as well.

At least we have the player now!
