I love my Getzen trumpet but the plastic third slide stops are a pain. Anyone got a better alternative to stopping the third slide falling out?

A Bach- or Yamaha-style stop could be installed. Yamaha sells a silicone rubber band that loops on the finger ring to keep the slide in place.

What about the comb don't you like?

For older style Getzens we've added the newer style stop/trim ring to the top tube along with the newer style push ring, the ones that have a nub on the bottom. Otherwise, I'd suggest a fabric covered hair elastic.

Premium Polybands by ElasticU

These are available in multiple sizes.. they're pretty tough (don't break often), and won't mess up the finish on your trumpet. Don't use recgular rubber bands as they react badly with ssilver plating.

Or have a tech mount a slide stop mechanism

If you leave the Yamaha slide stopper on the trumpet while resting in the case, will it eventually damage the finish or is it benign? Thanks.

Just a guess, but I don’t believe silicone would affect the finish. I know from experience that natural rubber WILL.

You can thank Charles Goodyear for that one.

The sulfur used to vulcanize the rubber attacks the silver - the black spots where the rubber band was is Silver Sulfide.

Now you know,
Gary.

To each his own, but I've always viewed the plastic comb as a pretty elegant solution. It keeps the slide from falling out and provides some flexibility as to how far you want to be able to extend the slide. Easy to remove and reinstall. No impact on resonance. No interaction with silver plating.

I like mine so much I was surprised that Getzen quit using them on newer models, although I like the new design equally well. Unless you go with the mod suggested by Mr Becker, I think you'd find the rubber band options a much bigger pain than the comb.

Just like the Amado keys I find it pretty slick. Replacements are readily available.

I cut a piece of string and tied loops in each end. I looped it through itself around the lower brace on the third valve slide then I popped off the second valve slide and put the other loop end there. There's just enough slack to allow me to move the third valve slide as much as I need, but not enough for it to fall off. It took several tries to get the length right.

Later I discovered you can buy those black plastic things on the net, but my string works fine.

Same here. I use a piece of string on my horns that don't have a 3rd valve slide stop. I tie a simple bow, and leave just enough slack for the slide to move.

FWIW, I've always used an old leather boot lace cut to the right length.

I've never had any problem with it.
