Can someone recommend a soft sounding mute for practice in a thin-walled hotel room when away from home... one which is 'free blowing' and doesn't 'back up' on you (like for instance a Harmon mute does)? Has anyone had experience with the EZ Bucket Mute?

EZ bucket mutes are quite nice, I use mine all the time (my prefered bucket mute).. but, not what I've used in hotel rooms. A great warm sound but maybe not quiet enough
For me either a cup mute with a felt ring stuffed in the cup (tissue works too)
Or a Yamaha Silent Brass - some find them stuffy - but when used with headphones IMO you don't push as hard balancing out the "stuffy" effect. Your neighbor won't hear a thing. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

I second the motion on Silent Brass. I have played normally from 10:00 12:00 P.M. in an apartment and never with a complaint.
I've found the SShh mute very light, not so resistant and quiet, but not as quiet as Silent Brass. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I would agree with the others, Silent Brass with headphones is the way to go for very quiet practice while in hotels, apartments, and even when others are nearby. My Wife routinely watches TV in the same hotel room while I practice a few feet away with my Bose Noise Cancelling Over the Ear Phones. Using the Aux jack and a music source, I can dial my sound right into the mix when I am woodshedding parts. I don't overblow when I can hear myself well, and the Silent Brass with Headphones does that well! I have used the Silent Brass Mute alone to warm my horn during performances by strategic placement of a few very soft notes a few bars ahead of the next written entrance after long rests or when switching to a cold Trumpet (Bb to C or the other way around). Just don't forget to take the Mute out! _________________ '71 LA Benge 5X Bb
