With a Conn "practice" mute in the bell. (think Pixie mute). |

Home Depot sells rubber plungers and wooden handles separately. Around $4.00 for the plunger. |

Just bought a 4.5" plunger on a stick from Amazon for $8. Saw the 'manufactured for trumpet players' type 'plunger' mute, with the little ring on it for $30+. |

Earlier this month I cut off the top part of a 50 oz., plastic, Pop Secret Popcorn jar (with the big, blue cap) to try as a plunger. Sounds nice but doesn't play well "close," below the staff.
The Vollrath ice cream dish that was linked to earlier is OK but I prefer this double-walled "dessert" dish --https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GAEWGA2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (when I bought one, it was about half this cost). Very loud and exceddingly dirty when required. I dipped the base in Plasti Dip to give it some grip.
I've had recent luck in 99ยข stores finding flexible (vs stiff) sink (small) plungers, which I like. Sometimes stiff or flexible toilet (large) plungers give the desired sound with a certain horn.
If your need of a plunger is mostly for ooh-wah'ing in a section, anything will do but for certain types of soloing and small-band situations, different sounding plungers can add to the arsenal.
Harmon still makes the two-piece system that gives a so-so straight mute, a terrible cup, and a good, metal plunger.
The Al Grey book on plunger technique is a solid resource but is increasingly hard to find.
The best use of an "alternate" plunger, on trombone ...

I have a big collection of plungers and pixie mutes my favorite is a very old French long pixie mute and a old Shastock Dorsey plunger, unbeatable sound.
