|
|
Trumpet Players!
I’m looking to order a Purviance in the 3C range through Musiciansfriend, but their sizing numbers is a little different then what Bob Reeves has on his website.
Musiciansfriend has the sizes listed as single digits and ones starting with a “P”: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/brass-instruments/bob-reeves-vintage-purviance-trumpet-mouthpiece
When I chatted with them, they just referred me to Bob Reeves’ size chart:
http://www.bobreeves.com/products/purviance/index.htm
I’m going to assume the sizings with a P is Bob Reeves’ version but the single digits don’t jive with the Purviance sizings.
Can someone give me hand with this?

The original blank pieces in that size is 5*3 or 9A the Reeves blank just P9A .
This size is 17.00mm and is around Bach 2.3/4C size .

Yep, what you want is either the 5*3 (if you prefer the original Purviance style blank) or the RP9A (if you prefer the Reeves style blank). Both mouthpieces are internally identical.
Note that though they don't list it, you can order the 5*3 through WWBW (and maybe Musician's Friend as well) and they'll special order it from Reeves. The price will be the same (I think $165 last time I checked) but you won't be able to utilize their return policy if you don't like the mouthpiece. If you order an RP9A the return policy applies.
Truth be told, I've thought about ordering an RP9A myself to see if I like that cup, and then if I did, returning the RP9A and then ordering the 5*3 so I can have it with the neat looking Purviance blank. But I haven't found the inner sociopath in me willing to do that yet.
That's strange the way the Musician's Friend website has all the Purviance models listed wrong. I know all they stock are the ones with the Reeves blank (I talked to WWBW on the phone about and both companies are basically one at this point). And now it's a minute later and I see the WWBW has them listed with wrong model numbers, too. What the heck is a P9Ab?!?! Reeves lists an RP9 (same shallower cup as the 4*3) and an RP9A (same deeper cup as the 5*3).
No wonder those companies are known to be headed downhill...
Whatever you decide to order, you better talk personally on the phone with them and make sure they order the right mouthpiece from Reeves. Or you can just deal directly with Bob Reeves (and pay full retail).
See you at the Trumpet Hang!
Cheers,
John |

John,
Thank you for the reply. This is why I sent the bat signal. I have no clue. I want to buy an RP9A, but I don't know if that's just the 9A or something else. I did try to talk with them and they have no clue. They just referred me to the website but I know they didn't bother to look because that was the reason I called them (the website and the Reeves site don't match). I am only going through them because I have a store card with them and it is typically convienent.

The standard shank on the Purviance pieces is the same as a Reeves #4 sleeve. If there is a B at the end of the designation it means that the shank is the same as a #5 sleeve, about the same as a "standard" Bach.
i.e. 5*3 B or P9A B has the same OD at the end of the shank as a Reeves 5. |

The Bach 3C is a little big or litte small for your lips .
If the answer is small stay on the 9A , if big go for the 8A.
Sorry but my poor English don't help me, I hope to understand what I mean.

Uuuu. I hope it arrives in time for the Trumpet Hang...
(I know, according to the Musician's Friend and WWBW websites they aren't available until several weeks after ordering.) |
