My idol for British Brass Band Cornet playing has been David Daws for a long time.
I believe he is using a Denis Wick 4B

The cornet is more like the human voice, so if you try to mimic light classical singers you will be a good way towards traditional style cornet playing. You need to practice lots of hymn tunes and similar lyrical passages. I always think the trumpet/cornet thingis a bit like the piano/organ thing. Similar keyboards but different techniques. _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

Yes, that David Daws video is really sweet. One of my favorite cornet videos on youtube. The cornet solo on "Brassed Off" from the William Tell Overture is nice, too (as is the rest of the piece)...

I found this one from the University on North Texas. My God, this college girl is incredible on cornet! Way, way, better than me on every aspect!

Edit: Skip ahead to around 1:30 or 1:35, as that's when the music starts. _________________ 1967 Holton Collegiate Trumpet --> my grade school band trumpet. I just can't part with it!

I gotta chirp in here.
I've dealt with and worked with this question for years. Why? Because my main music I play in 1920's - to 1950's Jazz. I love all Jazz but my main gig / money maker is Trad Jazz ala Dixieland and HOT Jazz ala 1920's. Of course we all know that Bix played a cornet, and so did Hackett. Louis started out on a cornet then went to trumpet. I've played many many of each. Here is my final "opinion on this" after years of playing both.
First and foremost the sound that comes out of the end of either cornet or trumpet comes from the guy behind the mouthpiece. I have recordings of myself on both trumpet and cornet and even a Puje. (hybrid). Good or bad it all sounds like me. The other and to me the biggest factor is the mouthpiece horn combination. We can stick in a deep funnel mouthpiece in a trumpet and damn near get it to sound like a flugel horn, and visa versa you can stuff a C cup shallow piece in a cornet and it will sound closer to a trumpet and get bright.
Then we all know that "not all horns are created equal". I've had cornets that with the same mouthpiece seemed very dark compared to another cornet with the same mouthpiece. So the equation is
"US + HORN + MPC -= the sound we want to achieve.
I've used a cornet and played Louis Armstrong type songs and had the tone very lively almost Selmer trumpet like. And I've used a deeper mpc with trumpet and try my best to get a Bix or Hacket sound. Once again "we make the sound" the horn just lays there and fights with us from time to time no matter what we use.
But to me it is super cool to chose. Choice is cool. I play both trumpet and cornet depending on the gig (inside, smallish room , type of 20's Jazz with acoustic piano and small band "cornet".. Trying to lead a loud band ?? Usually my choice is trumpet as for me it cuts through easier.
And to be honest it's just flat out COOL and FUN sometimes to change up from one to another. Some people tend to hear with their eyes. All good. |

I received an "A" on my high school senior composition compare/contrast essay on the similarities and differences in cornet and trumpet. Fortunately, the teacher had played in school band himself, and knew exactly what I was talking about. _________________ King Super 20 Trumpet; Sov 921 Cornet
