I received word from a mutual friend yesterday that the great Al Stewart had passed away on Monday. Al was a big band & lead trumpet legend in New York, and had relocated to Sarasota, Florida, where I met him.

Surprisingly, when looking for this obit, I found an interview he gave to the Local 802 Musician's Union newsletter this month(!):

Al was also a Trumpet Herald member. I had many fond memories of my time in Florida, sitting next to him in big band sections, or riding to a gig. Lots of wonderful stories from all the top big bands. He will missed.

Stumbled upon this insightful interview of Stewart about his time touring with Armstrong and Krupa, after the falling out with Goodman, and had to share:

Many thanks for posting the interview with Al Stewart. What great stories and younger players really need to know about these guys.
