Our cord is long enough to be pulled thru the tuning slide AND lead pipe at the same time (eliminates having to re-grease the slide).
The Reeves cord can do only the tuning slide or the lead pipe alone, not both at once.
The weights are INSIDE the cord (kinda hard for lead to get thru the material), not tied on like the Reeves.
With the weights being inside the cord, the cord provides a bit of cushion, should the weights knock against the horn body.
The THREE weights (not one like Reeves) are separated so that it’s easier to work them around tight curves like the 1st 2nd & 3rd valve slides.
Every Reeves swab I had - the material either pulled off or the cord broke. Early on we had a few instances of the material tearing off the cord (that was from over-stitching the material, an issue we fixed), but the material never got stuck in the lead pipe like it did one time for me with a Reeves swab.
And I’ve already posted about the longevity of use of our swabs.
The Brass Saver only spreads moisture - it’s doesn’t have any absorbing capacity. |
Hi trpthrld
I agree with all you say about your own swab, and own and use one sometimes. I however use the H W Brass Saver as my daily swab, predominantly because I find the plastic chord with its greater rigidity, far easier and quicker to navigate round the bends of cornets.
Regarding it not having any absorbing capacity, I use mine in association with a towel. It comes out pretty wet the first time, I dry the snake and cord thoroughly with the towel, repeat three or four times until the chord comes out dry. Although it may not have any real absorbing capacity, since it eventually comes out dry, it must at least have the capability to remove most of the water. Maybe your swab technically can get the leadpipe completely bone dry in comparison, but no offence, but I personally find the rigid plastic chord easier on cornets, and can do it with the cornet laying down flat, rather than having to keep rotating the cornet to get a weighted chord through.
Obviously with no intention of suggesting what you should do, or criticizing your existing product in anyway, have you ever considered making a version with a rigid chord for cornets, and a longer rigid chords, which can't get knotted, for flugels?
I for one would be interested in a the advantages of a chamois swab and plastic chord.
All the best

I had to order mine from Japan, on eBay as they aren't for sale in the UK. It was kinda pricy though. Definitely worth it, though!
If I was in the US, I'd have one of Tim's

Hi Mike
Although still hardly cheap, you can get the swab in your link, online from Yamaha Music, London.

Based, frankly, on this thread, I got one of Tim's. Looks great and I'm sure it'll do the trick.
But to be frank, I have played brass instruments off and on for half a century and never used a swab and never needed one. Why, then, do I have one now? It couldn't hoit. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

The Best Damn Trumpet Lead Pipe Swab Period
If this constitutes an endorsement, then it is just that. Bought three a couple weeks ago, and will NEVER be without them again. They are just that good!
