Hi guys,

I just recorded a video in which I compare by playing a Monette Silver 4 and a very cheap chinese mouthpiece (only €4,80 including shipping to Italy!) that I found on ebay.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IrvatVgbCr0

Just don't consider wrong notes, or the first croocked part of the video...just compare the tone.

What do you think?

The Monette plays like … a Monette, the Chinese more like a conventional mouthpiece (i suppose because of the bore and backbore). Tone apart (Monette sounds more resonant and "rich") you seem more "relaxed" with the chinese maybe for the added resistance to the blow?
Considering the very cheap price i think that China will conquer the world, eventually …

I'm more relaxed with the chinese because of the bigger diameter and the very deep cup. About resistance it is quite similar to the Monette.
Rim is also similar to the Monette and really comfortable.

About the price yes...it is ridiculous...

YOU make the tone...

I have taken a gamble on a few Chinese-machined $5 mouthpieces over the last few years. Some have been excellent, some crap. I have found that the designated size is not always correct. Also, the plating is not always up to typical standards.

For student use, many of the 3C's and 7C's are hard to beat for the price, and if they get trashed by a drop off of the bleachers or Dad's pliers, no big deal.

I snagged a flugel mouthpiece for $3 that is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Also a cornet mouthpiece that gives a Wick a good run!

For hard-core professional use, get a name brand of your preference!

Or not...

This is also the case...it is designated 3C, but it is definitevly bigger than a Bach 1-1/2C and deeper than a Bach C or B.

I don't think that tone is the foremost reason to buy a Monette mouthpiece. Their biggest selling points are about more efficient playing and more even intonation. And I wouldn't think it'd be fair to criticize Monette on tone based on one player's experience.

Also the silver Monette is not a "full fat" Monette mouthpiece.
To be honest, Monette mouthpieces are tantamount to cheating in terms of tone improvement and evenness of response.

Yes, but I like its quicker response than the Prana.

About this, I would use the verb to facilitate in place of to cheating.
If something can help you in having a fat sound why not use it?

If you're in Italy you should chat with AR also - similar design ideas to Monette (big throats, big backbores, shortened shanks to compensate) but with a more flexible approach to the individual needs

I'm not a Monette apologist and I don't use Monette equipment, but are you suggesting that using equipment that allows us to get the best result we can, or at least the result we want, is cheating?

Let's all go buy crap instruments, mouthpieces that produce thin tones and don't fit our faces so we won't be "cheating."

Sorry to come off harsh, but statements that using "Brand X" or "Model Y" equates to cheating rub me the wrong way. We select equipment because it allows us to do what we want more easily. No one wakes up and says, "I want to play a mouthpiece that sucks so I can prove I'm a real trumpeter!"

Gordon's not saying "it's cheating" in the sense that noone should do it... It's just a hyperbolic way of saying he finds them a huge advantage over anything else.

Perhaps this is one of those nuances of English spoken on different sides of the pond...
(If I must grant that either the Scots or Americans even speak English at all . -- yes, joking before anyone takes that literally)

Ah, ok. I can live with that.

On TPIN, a poster once explained something in a very technical way and I asked him to please explain it "in English" trying to be a bit humorous. Someone else messaged to let me let me know that he was from Germany. I sure felt like a dirtbag after that.

Out of Monette curiosity, how does the change in blow and feel of "the Monette way" factor into the comparison chart? I realize a consultation is best, but I'm curious from those that have switched.

Also, my main concern with the chinese mouthpiece shown here would be what the plating is. You know it's not gold, that's for sure. I wonder how it holds up / how it might react with certain skin types over time.

Well, I switched from a Monette Prana B4S3 to a Monette Silver 4 because I need a faster response and a brigther sound. This week I will receive a B3SF7 Prana because I feel the Monette Silver 4 too tight as backbore. I love big bore.

Finishing is not gold, it seem to be only polished, so not plated. Probably it has a different % of various metals from "standard" brass.
