I've seen photos of Phil Collins - the pop musician Genesis drummer - presumably playing trumpet. Does or did he ever have any kind of trumpet chops?

"No, I don’t play trumpet. I pretend to play trumpet. The trumpet to me is what the violin is to Jack Benny." -- Phil Collins (the drummer/singer, not Phil Collins the trumpet player)

Actually his name is James Morrison, he just looks like Phil Collins. OK at trumpet though.

If anyone recalls shopping at Ace or HD some years back, he was often cranked through an overhead system...one of the most challenging, surreal experiences if concentration was needed. It lasted over a decade in many establishments. "I've been waiting for this moment all my life.." is one I'll never forget.

Also if you happened to make a call and were placed on hold...

Phenomenal success, for a drummer to come up with an arsenal of smash hits like he did..other than Billy Joel, no one could really touch him.

If he finds the right teacher, he could surprise fans opening with a Chase number like 'Get it On'.

I get what he's saying, from what I've read Jack was in reality a pretty decent player who pretended to be bad.

FWIW, Phil Collins did play trumpet on at least one song in his solo discography. "Do You Know, Do You Care?" from Hello I Must Be Going features Collins playing (more like blatting) a few notes in the intro and fade out.
