Trumpet? Dark Tone? Aren't those two items mutually exclusive?

Dark was the adjective my college professor used to describe my trumpet tone.

Care for raw brass? Lacquer the freaking horn, you idiot!

It's so hard to play! Well then, play a clarinet and SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!

What horn is perfect? THE ONE THAT COMES OUT WHEN I SHOVE IT... somewhere.

My dog none of this is rocket surgery. If you're that stupid you can't play, find a motherloving teacher and learn something for once.

I know Mohan. I dont know how he writes these novels again and again. At least knows WTF he's talking about.

I'm having newbie fatigue, I guess. Find a freaking teacher and learn to freaking play.

Pardon me, I have a rock to crawl under.

Tom

Man all this is why I left TH/TM for several years, I got bored and decided to practice instead. Now I'm bored at work and back to kill time!

I think that part of the issue, and why some of these questions are asked/threads are created, is the current culture and nature of the fast-paced world we live in. Everyone thinks there's a faster or easier way to do something.

The truth is, it has always been the same when it comes to trumpet - trumpets haven't fundamentally changed in a long time, and people are people. It can't be rushed. It takes dedicated, focused and repetitive practice. People don't want to hear that though. They don't want to hear that if you are having issues with (insert fundamental problem), then the best thing you can do is to put in some specific work on that fundamental problem.

Poor sound? Work on long tones, lip slurs, and other exercises that promote chops focus.

Poor articulation? Do lots and lots of tonguing exercises to improve it and clean it up.

Range issues? Work to build your fundamentals. (see: working on getting a better sound)

Don't know all of your scales? Work on them systematically until you know them.

Tom is right - it isn't rocket science.

When I was a kid, very few kids got any kind of private lessons unless they were getting them from the school band director or an older high school kid. Pro trumpet players/teachers just weren't available in my rural SW Nebraska hometown of 2,000 people, and yet, we had a killer band program in the late 70s and early 80s. We took the HS Jazz band to a national competition in Reno one year and placed 2nd overall.

How could this be!?!?

Because kids PRACTICED THEIR INSTRUMENTS. They put in the work to come up to a high level of expectation and a high standard, and they met it. They weren't looking for a shortcut, and mediocrity was not the accepted standard.
