I just got an old Getzen Eterna cornet. It plays well and seems to be a great horn.

I thought Getzen Eternas were model 800 or 850. This one doesn't have a model number stamped on it.

Its serial# is G8** and has an LB stamped for large bore.

I looked at a couple of Getzen serial number lists and didn't see any G-series, so I don't know what to think.

Any information you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Does it have lever or Amado water keys? May just be an early model...

Photos would help...

I'm guessing that the G8**** serial number indicates Getzen 800 xxxxxxx.

Thanks for offering to help. It has lever water keys. I guess that makes it older. I'll try to put up some pictures.

I had one like that with serial #C805 and was made in the early- to mid-1960s. They didn't have a consistent numbering system for those older Eternas. I sold it to a Northwestern grad student about a year ago.

If ever in doubt on anything Getzen, email them the serial number and they’ll get back to you. I’ve sent them random questions a couple times on horns I was thinking of bidding o. eBay for, and Mary was always able to get me info on older horns (as long as the horn wasn’t built before the factory fire).

While they have a lot of info they don't have info an all of them. The Eterna cornet I mentioned, for instance.

The shape of the tubing should tell you the story. The 850 is now the 3850. The 800 remains virtually unchanged, and was closely copied by Blessing with their B-141.

the old serial numbers are a crap shoot due to a factory fire. But call & ask.The Getzen front office is helpful.

I belive that 3 digit serial numbers are the oldest series they made for Eterna cornets. The 8 is just added on to indicate it's a 800 series. I have a no letter 8xx horn, which was one of the first 100 made. You probably have a very early one (assuming they go with A-Z, making yours 7xxth Eterna ever!) i don't think they started making Eternas until after the factory fire. You can try to track down Nick DeCarlis at deca@mindspring.com since he is trying to compile a list for early Eternas.

Hope that helps!
