I have an audition for a band that requires me to sight read grade five music. What time signatures and keys should i expect? Do you have any examples? Thanks!

If this is ABRSM, then buy the Specimen Sight Reading Tests G1-5.

From memory 3/4 sharps/flats, 2/4 3/4 4/4 6/8 9/8, maybe common and cut common time.

If you buy the book (super cheap used) you’d get an idea.

IMO the ABRSM sight reading is too easy.

Best,
Mike

There are many 'grading systems for various organisations, such as those who offer practical examinations on performance (ABRS, Trinity College, AMEB down under, Royal Toronto Conservatorium(? there's a Canadian system of some sort), etc. etc.) Then there's the publisher grading, which tries to make it easier for a band conductor to select music*...

If it's a band audition, I suspect it's a publisher grading, which would mean, reasonably difficult. The only way to prepare sight reading is to do a LOT of it, over a long period of time to build up this skill.

Hope that helps!

cheers

Andy

* If one conducts a band and can't see and hear internally how a piece is, then relying on a numbering system only makes me think ' God help your band!'.
