New Chris Gekker Book "Slow Practice"

I am just going through Chris Gekker's new book "Slow Practice" and I am totally digging it. It just launched today on qPress if you haven't seen it. Click here to give it a look.

If you have gone through it, what are your thoughts? I feel like this one is the culmination of a lot of hard work on Chris' part and a good reflection on what has made him such a fantastic player.

I am assuming you will be able to get one from Colin Music in hard copy, but it is not up on their site yet.

It's a wonderful book! His take on just the basic Schlossberg exercises are worth their weight in gold..

This book is well worth purchasing (as are Gekker's other books). Much of it consists of studies from Arban and Schlossberg, but there is plenty of interesting and useful advice regarding each of those studies -- do not observe the fermatas; slur up, articulate down; add a rest between the highest notes of the phrase, etc. -- so that the material feels fresh/original.

Also, Gekker offers his own variations on many of the studies. I particularly like his six variations on Schlossberg #25, which is part of my daily routine.

Finally, he offers several of his own studies -- two based on passages from Bruckner -- and his scale/chord routine.

Is slow practice a new concept or are his concepts involving greater use of the mind?

I've been playing out of it for about a month, and I am seeing some solid improvement in my efficiency and sound. I think the best part of the book is not the notes, but what he writes about the exercises.

I recently picked up a copy of "Slow Practicing," and I have to say that it is one of the most significant new books to come out in a while. The exercises are great, mainly some tweaked Arban's and Schlossberg, but the gold here is Gekker's writing about trumpet and practicing as he is one of our most important thinkers and writers. Taken together his books contain some of the best wisdom out there for the modern trumpet player.

No offence at all to Qpress here...I did buy the download and quickly realized how much I dislike using my IPad for practicing. Old school I guess. The good news is when I received the print version of this EXCELLENT book I was very impressed with the quality. Super easy to read, well laid out and high quality paper. A first rate book all around. Kudos to Chris Gekker and Colin Publications for a great product.

ScottA, iPad practice is definitely not for everyone. Some people just need the paper to feel comfortable. I have moved fully to iPad because the convenience of 1000 books in one thin device is worth any trade off. I hear many perspectives from customers day to day, especially at the qPress table at ITG all week.
