Miel Adams has adopted a step bore valve configuration on the Adams F4 4-valve flugel: 0.413 on valves 1, 2, and 3… while valve 4 seems to be bored at 0.450 .
Yet, the engineering goal for step bores is still a little unclear to me. What is the expected effect of a step bore on
• Tone and Overtones… Both below the staff and down into the pedale range, as well as through the staff and above.
• Intonation throughout the range
• Core
• Projection
• Slotting
• Stability on low to high dynamics
What might be other advantages and disadvantages when contrasted with single 0.413 bore on all four valves?
