For a minute I was wondering if you were talking about the rock and roll group from the 60s and 70s called The Band, with hits like:

Up on Cripple Creek
Othelia
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
The Weight

This cut of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" from the film "The Last Waltz" has some really nice horn work on it.

Whoa, thanks Patrick, that was a very nice tangent. Had never heard that version.

Apologies, Skip, that your question remains unanswered.

I don't know about a musical, but "The Band" made a huge concert film (with an assortment of guest musician's) in 1976 called "The Last Waltz", and it signified their farewell, as they were going to disband after that.

Patrick included a video of the concert from "The Last Waltz", which is awesome. The guys started out as The Hawks, backing a Canadian musician named Ronnie Hawkins. They struck out on their own after that, and then Bob Dylan heard of them and how amazing they were, and they quickly became his backing band and were dubbed "The Band", and the rest is history.

Each member is an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist... Not just one guy or so like in most bands. EVERY member could quite literally switch all around and play this, play that, play this. Check out the liner notes on some of their albums from the 60's & 70's... There were NO session musicians used at all. Everything from horns to harpsicord to cello to mandolin to an old church organ, was all done by members of The Band in the studio.

Getting back on topic, I don't know of an arrangement of a musical called "The Band". Sorry...

The Band was a fine band, but they used uncredited session musicians. For instance, "Life Is A Carnival" from the Cahoots album uses a fine New Orleans horn section brought in by Allen Toussaint, uncredited. Producer John Simon played piano and miscellaneous wind and string instruments on several of their early albums.

Thanks, mm55. Now that explains it.... Uncredited session players. Wow, I never knew!

After this trip down memory lane I can testify having grown up in the 60s and matriculating in the 70s, that I never smoked marijuana but I may have smoked my Arban Book about 1974. Memory is pretty shaky on that though. I've never been the same, either!
