It's his Selmer 25B Balanced with the 5* Parduba HJ mouthpiece. Obviously pre-recorded (as all were in those days) but Harry played the living *#@& out of it as he did on everything he played.

His trumpet player for many years (Nick Buono) joined Harry in 1939 and was on the band still when I joined in 1964 staying until 1970 or so. Nick was on this movie clip along with great tenor soloist Corky Corcoran (my golfing buddy) and said that all was pre-recorded in those days for the movies Harry did. One thing about Harry and movies...married to Betty Grable and downright handsome, he had a tiny squeaky voice that probably derailed his cinema career.
Tony are sure that it was prerecorded? His valve combinations coincide exactly with the notes that he was playing. What a beast!
I imagine they were actually playing but the performance you're hearing isn't the performance you're seeing. There may have been examples in that era of the actual filmed performance being used but there are a lot of problems with filming and recording, particularly given the state of the art of recording at that time.
Here's an example where you hear the audio of the actual filmed performance - recording gear had advanced a lot since that Harry James movie. I'm told the mics were out of view of the cameras.
