I have a hard time bringing in students for private lessons. If I taught guitar or drums I would have all the students I could handle. I have gone to the local schools but to very little effect. Any student I get, I try to make it as fun as possible. I go to their recitals at their schools to show my support but still the lessons are the first thing to go. Any thoughts?

Not to sound overly pessimistic, but trumpet - wind instruments actually - just don't have the appeal that rock/pop oriented instruments do. I've had the same experience regarding, not only trumpet, but French horn, flute, clarinet and even ironically, sax. I'm afraid it's a sign of the times.

It is somewhat regional. There's an abundance of trumpeters in Texas but even that can be sparse, depending on where you live. And maybe in some other locations it can be more abundant, but I share your concern.

For you, personally, I'm not sure you can do any more than what you are already doing. Want more students? Switch to guitar.

You are probably right. I do play a little guitar but not enough to teach someone. Thanks for your comments, Steve

I currently teach (and have been since 2013) in a local school system, during the school year I generally have around 20 students, after school.

In my area, you absolutely must apply through the district first and go through the background check before you are considered for employment as a lesson teacher. Given the climate of today’s schools, this is understandable. Contacting band directors individually without doing this is a total waste of time, they generally will ignore emails from someone outside the district. Again, not hard to understand.

All that being said, as kehaulani mentioned, guitar and drums in today’s society are absolutely more popular (and in some ways less difficult, though some might disagree) than brass instruments. Obviously.
