Hi there. I've got a raw brass horn that I love and I'm thinking of getting a gold lacquer put on it. I would love to not have to send it off somewhere. Can anyone recommend a good place in the SF Bay Area that does this kind of work?

Thanks!

I recently looked into getting one of my horns re-lacquered. The price for doing it was outrageously high.

Something to consider about having it done in California is the state EPA regulations are so ridiculously strict that the cleaning process before lacquering make it difficult to guarantee that all the acid will be removed from..well..where acid likes to hide...on horns and that acid bleed-thru is almost a guaranteed occurrence.

By "gold lacquer", do you mean actual lacquer, which is usually clear, applied to a polished horn, or gold plating?

Clear lacquer with a gold dye added. Think old Selmer Paris color.

I do repair in San Carlos, CA, but I don't lacquer entire instruments. I sent the last job I prepared to Tom Green in Elkhart. IN. Superb job, he's great. And I think he can tint lacquer.

What did he charge and what was his turn-around time?

This is what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions for places outside of CA with good work and fast turnaround time?

Thanks!

Try A&G Music/Best Repair in Oakland
510 832-2452

Dick Akright still works in the shop a few days a week
Bryan, the new brass repairman, is FANTASTIC

They can either take care of your horn or steer you in the right direction.
