I bet playing it just once must have been easy for him then.

Weird to be responding to something written 7 years ago, but for me that was the great thing about both Severinsen and Mendez, the fact it wasn't easy and required so much work to create perfection. By playing it three times back to back he made sure he could play it once, but I doubt even then he let up on the pressure he put on himself.

It is not amazing that we have people able to conceive perfection, but that we have those able to overcome their humanity to execute it.

I have never heard anything about Mendez being able to play it all three times in one shot. I seriously doubt that.

I heard Rafael Mendez in concert in Columbus in the late 60's or early 70's. He played a fabulous concert and Moto Perpetuo was one of the pieces. At the end of the concert he got a standing ovation that went on for quite a white. Rafael went to the mike and, very emotionally, said that he was not feeling well that day and had not had an opportunity to prepare a piece as an encore, but he was so moved by crowd he would play anything he and the band had performed, again. The crowd called for Moto Perpetuo. He played it a second time...flawlessly. Needless to say, I ran to the lobby after the concert and purchased the album with MP on it. An incredible concert I will never forget.

That sounds like a seriously inspiring concert. I think it's so awesome when performing artists like him really let their wonderful character shine through.

I wish I could've been alive while he was around...

I recorded moto perpetuo but I would never consider playing it live! The problem isn't playing it perfect, its having the endurance! Its like having a string tied to your finger for 4:30 mins! if you want to hear check it out

Rafael was a superb player. I find the "he could have done it but he didn't" stories to be dubious. Being in a recording studio gives you the luxury of doing something more than once if it doesn't turn out the way you want.
