Been lurking on here and other sites for advice for returning players, to this end this one (trumpet herald) in particular seems to be the best of the lot. Perspectives and experiences from a wide variety of musicians.
I recently got back into playing after almost a decade after my grandfather who bought me my first pro horn recently passed away. When I went to college music became too mechanical and it wasn't fun anymore, especially since I had never really considered playing music to make a living and did it because I enjoyed playing music.
Anyway, fast forward now I'm 30 and am trying to get my chops back- I bought schlossberg, bai Lin, and a Yamaha silent brass (so I can play in the condo late at night, if the itch strikes of course). Been two weeks since I began and already getting better flexibility and note centering, tone is actually not bad just need to work on consistent articulations. Also focusing on breathing and having proper support.
The goal is to record music I write since one of the interests I learned after hanging up the horn the first time was audio engineering so we will see how that develops. Would love to find a group to play with eventually.
Right now I'm content blapping away until I can get back into shape, I suspect I'll be visiting often for the insights this forum offers.
Thanks!

Welcome.
If you can swing it I highly recommend taking at least one lesson from a pro just to make sure you're on the right path. I'd also expect them to be able to provide you with a balanced daily routine appropriate for where you're at and where it is you want to go. Nothing beats sitting with a pro just to get a really mature sound in your head. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I had considered that, when I get some more practice down I'll have to look for a pro in the area, I'm in Northeast Ohio.
In the meantime I'm listening to some Doc Sev and Phil Smith recordings I still have. Having a sound in my head is mostly how I learned "tone" since I just liked how Maurice Murphy sounded so I wanted to sound like him. Interestingly though that naturally one develops his/her own take on that source tone and never really "copies" anything. Musical-Philosophical bit aside, I think you're correct in the importance of him hearing me too so I can know if I'm tricking my own ears, ha.
The routine I'm trying to nail down, playing about every other day. My old teacher had me doing a modified schlossberg with only certain ones circled (fortunately still had my original copy) so I'm about halfway through before I'm jello embouchure. Sucking is kinda funny this time around |

A 10 year break isn't too bad. You are young and you will bounce back quickly. I came back in 2016, at the age of 80 after a 50 year layoff. Things were a lot tougher for me but I am making great strides and loving playing again.
Good luck on your journey, and remember to have fun. _________________ GeorgeB

Thanks for the reply, wow a 50 year layoff! There's really no excuse then, ha. Very impressive. Well done taking the plunge after all that time.
Thanks for the encouragement!
