Health reasons have caused me to get out of the community band business, so I will be playing a lot less. Sold my flugelhorn, the Lightweight 400s, and the Holton. I kept my grandfather's 400 (of course), the matching cornet, and the long/narrow Custom Built.

I've been wanting to learn to play guitar for ages, so wish me luck with my Gibson SG and Epiphone Masterbilt archtop acoustic!

I'll be around now and again, and at the Chicago Trumpet Hangs. You can send me private messages with your Buescher questions any time!

Tom

Hope you'll be feeling better soon Tom. I know that these new challenges must be hard on you.

Transitions of life can and do present some difficult adjustments in many ways.

I have been thinking for some time now about the possibility of the trumpet playing era of my life coming to end, and what, if anything, to do next.

The guitar and piano have been on my mind, since I have some rudimentary level knowledge of each and neither require the use of the mouth and teeth. In time, the teeth will probably be the issue for me.

I also think both are more "forgiving" when it comes to practice time. Of course, it depends on the skill level one wishes to achieve.

Best wishes to you as you move ahead.

Sorry to hear that Tom, I hope you enjoy the transition to guitar.

Also, I’ve wondered in the past about the meaning of VetPsychWars, would you care to tell us?

Best of luck!

Brad

Sorry to hear that, Tom. 99% of everything I know about Buescher's came from you. Hope you'll keep hanging around here regardless how your trumpet playing changes going forward.

Trumpet is a tough instrument to keep up even without health concerns. You may find taking a break is a relief! Guitar is a great instrument, very versatile and forgiving to play at whatever level suites you. You'll find a whole new world of playing opportunities & music styles, too.

Oh! I was thinking of the receiving not the giving end of the transaction.

Tom, we will miss you.

To the OP,

I don't know what your health reasons are but just wanted to put it out there that the saxophone is a MUCH easier instrument to play than trumpet. The reed does all the work and if you get a mouthpiece that's on the smaller side and a light reed you can produce a note just by exhaling.

Just a thought.....

Also,if I couldn't play a wind instrument the guitar would definitely be my instrument of choice. You can practice anytime of the day and for as long as you want. I bet you will pick it up faster than you think. Just be sure your axes are set up well. Nothing more discouraging than a guitar that is poorly setup. You get intonation problems and difficulty playing chords in the first position.

Oh, also if you are inclined, try a classical guitar. I found that really fun because I like to play written music and the classical stuff is challenging and fun. Also the nylon strings are easy on the fingers.

Now I'm getting the itch to play a guitar again.....

I missed playing too much. I am going to try a community band again. I found out that I had a rotator cuff tear in my left shoulder, some physical therapy has helped. and the fatigue has gotten better... so, we'll see what happens.

Of course I don't have the lightweight horns any more, but the weight difference wasn't that much.

We'll see how it goes.

Good luck, hope it works out for you!

I am looking at similar surgery in my future; my wife thinks now, but I'm afraid to go find out. It's just painful, not debilitating, so far...

Best wishes to you in Greenfield, Wi. Stay close to the music community. Learning the guitar sounds like a great idea. Best wishes.

I was able to trade the buyer of my Model 228 Lighweight 400 for the Model 240 medium bore.

Try, try again!
