Very sad news for the TH community. Lex Samu has passed away in his early 40's. Lex was an amazing contributor here on TH. His excitement for anything "trumpet" was something we all on TH thrive on . He was a wonderful person and will be missed greatly.

Here is a "tribute page" link for Lex:

This is such sad news. Lex was ALWAYS a polite and friendly guy on the TH. I'll miss him and I'm sure we all will. For those who would like to see some of his fine writing, Lex's TH ID was: ljazztrm

https://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/search.php?search_author=ljazztrm

Sincerely,

John Mohan

P.S. I just found this on Lex's Facebook page:

Quote:
Dear Friends of Lex Samu,

I am deeply saddened to inform you that Lex passed away on Friday August 10, in his home, apparently of natural causes. He was 43. He was found seated as his desk, still wearing his Friday-night gig clothes, headphones on, a pen is his hand.

He is survived by his mother and father. His body will be cremated; there are no plans for a public service.

Lex’s mom, Noreen, created a page where friends can leave condolence messages: http://lex-samu.forevermissed.com.
She would especially appreciate your sharing memories/stories/feelings/thoughts about Lex.

She has also asked for a group prayer for Lex. She wrote: "I've chosen this Thursday (August 23rd) at noon time as a good time since many musicians have gigs in the evening. I'm hoping to get many many prayers that will help Lex."

Also, as you know, Lex was at the hub of a wide variety of music projects and activities, and your help is greatly appreciated in passing on this sad news to his friends and fellow musicians, to his students, to schools at which he taught, and to anyone else with whom he had regular contact.

And not least, for those of us concerned about Lex's beloved cats, Giovanni and Olive, they are now in good care with Deb Wantuch, Lex's intrepid neighbor, who is herself a "guardian" of many cats. They were both rescue cats from her organization GiveMeShelterProject.org.
Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in honor of Lex can do so at their Facebook page: Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. or contact Deb at debwantuch@gmail.com.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Richard Russo
Bandleader for the Friday quartet at Capital Grille. It was my good fortune to make music there with Lex every Friday for eight years.

Kind, enthusiastic, eager to contribute to a good discussion. Always.

I mean his avatar photo, in which he is joyfully bear-hugging a cat, says it all.

Damn I just bought a trumpet from him earlier this summer, I feel like I just talked to him. I had no idea he was sick. Very sorry to hear this.

edit: wow, his last post on TH was on August 10, the day he passed.

I'm sadden to hear this news. I have bought, sold and traded stuff with Lex over the years. Very friendly fellow. I remember when he got Carol Brass to make a one off horn based off an old Conn Vocabell with the rimless bell. Never met him, but I felt like I knew him. My condolences to his friends and family. Rest In Peace my friend.

I talked to him here from time to time, and occasionally got into conversations with him by e-mail. He was a great guy with large enthusiasm. I hope his family is holding up all right. He'll be missed.

Regardless of his particular religion (whether actually religious or not) he was a Mensch.

Wow, that really caught me off guard, Lex helped me many times with advice and encouragement, especially when using the small id mouthpieces i switched to, I purchased a couple from him recently, the latest a warburton 10es top.
i enjoyed reading his posts and frequently sought his advice. He will be missed. Peace to all his family and friends for their loss.

This is very sad news. Lex was always positive and upbeat in his posts. I had questions for him from time to time and he was always helpful. What a great guy and fabulous player! It seems he was doing what he truly loved- playing and sharing his enthusiasm for the trumpet and his music.

He will always be a part of our community.

As he always said, "All the best."

Lex also shared his thoughts with me on MF style mouthpieces. Truly sad for someone to pass so young.

Very sad news and so young.

I only knew him about 6 months on TH since i started taking an interest in the Belknap routine, he helped me with a few queries and as many have said here, very polite and a pleasure to deal with.

Vale Lex

Lex was a good guy. We had chatted here a few times about mouthpieces and trumpet, and he was an enthusiastic person who was always happy to talk shop. He was a kind, gentle-seeming person, and the world is poorer for his absence.

Sad news. I only knew him through TH, but he seemed to be a really good guy. Knowledgeable and friendly in a very genuine way. Condolences to his family and friends.

I didn't know him personally but he seemed to be a very active member of the trumpet forums and I enjoyed reading all of his posts.

it was a couple days ago he was discussing his strong man routine of flipping around truck or tractor tires.
quick exit for someone who could have been around forever. he was never fully satisfied with anything. it was all open frontier. he can take all that into the afterlife.
he will be in our dreams.
