I am now a comeback player of 6-7 months (at age 73). A few of you may recall me when I posted here a few times back in the winter. I am playing pretty well and I think my progress is okay, generally speaking, that is, when I play my cornet (a Sonata make by the way). It's a lovely instrument. But here is something odd: back when I used to play many years ago I never played cornet, only trumpet and had a good range (to G above top C). Now I find I cannot play high on any trumpet but seem to find a barrier, but no such problems with my cornet. I have tried several trumpets - top makes and poor ones - but they don't facilitate a high register. Also obviously tried different mouthpieces.

I do understand that it's still early days for me but can somebody explain this?

museltof.

Are you playing a deep cup mouthpiece on cornet?

Hello Richard.
I think it is just a standard cornet mouthpiece which came with a cornet which was new about 10 months ago. It does seem to be a v-shaped cornet mouthpiece, rather than a cup-shaped one. I play very well on it. I suppose it is about medium in size, it has nothing marked on it.

Thank you.

I suggest you get a similar cup mouthpiece for your trumpet as the one you have for your cornet.

I had an idea of why it might be, but the answer might be the obvious one. I can play much higher and easier on my flugelhorn and cornet. Both are less work physically than the trumpet. So less energy in means easier to play. For me.

I honestly don't think that is it. I play hard on my cornet, plenty of high notes because at least I am able to; I have a real desire to play in a fiery way on the trumpet but I get a sort of cut-off point a round F or G (just above the stave). I suppose it is quite strange really, unaccountable but, there again, I am, still less than a year into my comeback.

Maybe I just have to be patient. Thanks anyway.

Strength, young Skywalker, comes with time. Be diligent. There are no shortcuts.

maybe it is the grip and/or the distance between your face and the grip point.
I had a similar experience with my pocket trumpet an I think it was the way/angle I pushed it in my face and the way I move it around while playing.
(Of course no hard pushing or big movements)
