|

If you play jazz, what mpc works best for you? I'm looking for the ultimate in a piece that retains a warm sound while favoring upper register playing.
I realize your rim diameter could very well be different than what I need. I'm mainly interested in cup shape and throat/backbore.
Thanks for any suggestions! _________________ Jim Hatfield

I play a GR 3 on my Eclipse cornet. FYI, my trumpet and flugel mouthpieces are GRs in the 66 range. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

What? I missed the part where Jim became an Eclipse Cornet player. There has to be a story about this. What's up?!!! _________________ Richard

Richard, you may remember my dalliance with a Flip Oakes American long cornet. It was a fine horn but I couldn’t get the sound I wanted from it so I traded it for an Eclipse. Much happier but still looking for the perfect mouthpiece. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Right. I had forgotten about the trade for the Eclipse. One of these days I have to get to Chicago for one of your hangs. So much cool stuff out there to try. I had a friend try my York Eminence the other day so I got to hear it from the other end. Very nice with a Wick 3B. I immediately bought another 3B for myself. You never know what is going to work. _________________ Richard

And then there was the other time he had an Eclipse cornet. |

Jeez, you guys are really ringing me up. Yeah, I had an Eclipse cornet that I played in the Illinois Brass Band for a few years but decided to focus on jazz so I found an Eclipse trumpet owner who wanted to trade.
Then came my experiment with Flip's long cornet and I heard the Eclipse beckoning again. Not the same one but its twin. So it goes in brass world. It's all good. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Hi Jim
I'm not sure that retaining a warm sound while favouring upper register playing is completely mutually inclusive, but my suggestion would be something with a 3C cup shape, as explained by Doug Meeuwsen in his description of his Jazz Cup #3.
http://www.meeuwsenmouthpieces.com/Jazz_Cups.html
Maybe this is too shallow for the warm sound which you are asking, but I wouldn't say that it is particularly favours the upper register either. I however reckon that it would be a good compromise.
The Kanstul one piece 3C may be a good choice. It is basically a CG3 in a different blank, and is a slightly shallower 3C with a more open throat and larger backbore.
i.e. https://www.kanstul.com/one-piece-cornet-mouthpiece-kanstul-series/
I have a custom one of these with my rim, and it is a good player on cornet.
I however prefer my Kanstul B3C top with a Kanstul B10 backbore, and this is what I use on cornet for Jazz. Although effectively a Bach 3C, I like this much better on cornet, and personally feel that the extra mass at the bottom of the cup owing to the Bach trumpet (rather than cornet) style blank, gives a warmer sound.
I hope that this will be of some help.
All the best

Thanks, Lou!
I’ve been using my Eclipse cornet a lot lately for New Orleans and Chicago style jazz and having good results with a Curry 3DC and also liking a Warburton 4MC/KT* combination.
BTW, I’ve been stepping up my use of pixie/plunger which is facilitated by the shorter dimensions of the Eclipse. And I get the best muted sound by using a Wick EB/D straight mute for the pixie. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Curry P mouthpiece. Nice sound. Easy to play. Still has warmth. Great for trad jazz style play. Works in almost every cornet I have. But then, I don't have an Eclipse. _________________ Richard

Hi Jim
You are very welcome.

Thanks very much for the further detail. I like the Curry 3DC but for some reason prefer the 3TC. I however feel that the 3DC is probably the better option for Jazz.
BTW, I’ve been stepping up my use of pixie/plunger which is facilitated by the shorter dimensions of the Eclipse. And I get the best muted sound by using a Wick EB/D straight mute for the pixie.
I've never personally tried a pixie, but I've read before about the suggestion of the Wick Eb/D straight mute as a pixie mute. I've done more swing and dance band work than Jazz, and the Jazz band I am currently playing in plays mainly American Songbook repertoire. I therefore generally use trumpet and flugel, but use cornet for a few trad/blues numbers.
Take care

I play an Eclipse cornet in brass band with a Wick 3B. I find the Sparx and GRs mate well with it too. I haven't played the Curry's with it much but the 3DC is a very nice mouthpiece that gets a mellower tone without being a lot of work. |
