How would you go about teaching a first trumpet lesson to someone who has never even held the instrument?

Hello again,
Start with the buzz. Go to the handling of the instrument. Talk about care and maintenance. Go back to the buzz and mouthpiece. Teach by rote and depending on age and reading ability, introduce note reading.

I do it all the time, of 24 students this year I have 8 beginners.

Buzz, explain how to hold the horn, buzz, put the mouthpiece in the horn and try to produce a tone, buzz, play.....pretty much like this in the beginning, in addition to a bit of explanation about how to empty the spit valves, etc. Also doesn’t hurt to mention that dropping/denting the horn is not a good idea; sometimes kids think that brass is a metal it’s indestructible.

Especially with young kids, I try to talk less and play more; their attention span for listening is usually much shorter than for playing/buzzing.

Or, don't start with a buzz

https://mysterytomastery.com/beginner-page/

I highly recommend Greg Spence's Mystery to Mastery (now, WindWorks)

Look at the 2nd video in the series, first -- without the student and with an open mind -- and "get" what he's doing with minimal air and starting on the mpc with no buzz.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=292&v=PxwArs959jY

This really works. It's foreign to a lot of teachers/players. Yes,other ways work, too.

This is a great way to start with a total beginner.

Greg's paid site -- WindWorks is even better Lots and lots of teaching insight and techniques from beginners to working pros.

Irrespective of any duplicitous intent of the OP, this is an important topic and this is a great video by Bill Bergren!!

Bill – where were you teaching this?

I have been using less air than you seem to be using in the demonstration and not I do not mention the word, “blow,” with students – just using the air that was being used to produce the vocalization, as Greg Spence demonstrates in the video that I linked.

Sometimes I’ll have them try to focus on a candle flame – to get a sustained wobble (caused by the smooth, gentle breath) without being blown out. I can't remember if I got that from Greg or from Jim Manley.

There’s a ton of info in your video which I hope will be considered by those who are convinced that Buzz-and-Blow is the best way to start a beginner.

Think about the most basic things you know how to do and walk them through it from the beginning. Don't take a single thing for granted!
Keep the pace quick and have them mimic you, teach it back to you to ensure understanding, etc.

Start with:

How to sit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=k1luKAS_Xcg
How to breathe and move great air
How to form a basic embouchure
How to open the case
How to hold the mouthpiece
How to vibrate/buzz
How to pick up the trumpet, how to hold it, playing position
Putting the trumpet up to your face without changing your great posture

You get the idea...

I usually start students with teaching them how to Free buzz a concert F, some of them get it right away, some take time! But as soon as they develop the ability to do so, it makes sounding that first pitch much easier
