Im asking this just out of interest and to get some movement in this forum, its been pretty quiet! (maybe everyone has been practicing , or could be its summer in the north of the globe!)
I am curious if Claude had any favourite material after students had gone through the usual, Clarke, Irons, Colin, St J's etc until they got advanced, such as Gatti, Aaron Harris, maybe Schlossberg. Im guessing you guys that studied for a long time would recall this. As i say, just out of interest.
Thanks

Yes. I worked out of all the French books. Claude had me buy them all at once from Leduc, under the premise that sheet music always goes up in price, but never down. Kinda like cars.
So I worked in Petit, Laurent, Charlier (of course) and there may be others. I do have French books that CG made me buy that I have never used.

Same here. Claude took me through St Jacome, Arban, Williams, Gatti, the Smith Flexibilities, Colin, Irons, Schlossberg, the Clarkes (Technical Studies, Characteristic Studies and Setting Up Drills), his own books, all the French books Eric Bolvin mentioned and some other obscure, out-of-print books including Lip Training Exercises by Pedro Lozano who was the principal trombonist for the Mexico City Symphony. My first wife was very patient and understanding!
Best wishes,

Del Staigers
"Flexibility Studies and Technical Drills"
Part 1 Studies in Flexibility
for Trumpet or Cornet
and
"Flexibility Studies and Technical Studies"
Part 2 Technical Drills for Finger Facility
for Trumpet or Cornet
"One interesting thing to note is that Claude took his ideas for Daily Trumpet Routines lessons 14-16 from the middle of the Staigers book. If you have the two books you can see what I'm talking about. 2013
"As far as flexibility and the books just mentioned, I would add Del Staigers Lip Flexibility book. Take a look at that and compare it to Claude's Daily Trumpet Routines on lessons 14, 15 and 16 in the first section of DTR. Claude creatively took a pattern from Staigers' book and elaborated on it with more models and different intervals. But, you can tell where it came from." 2015

Did Claude use any of the Sigmund Hering books?
Bill Knevitt used them with his students.
Also, did Claude use any Jaroslav Cimera or Harold "Pappy" Mitchell? _________________ Bill Knevitt, who taught me the seven basic physical elements and the ten principles of physical trumpet playing and how to develop them.

I’m new and this is my first post, though I’ve read a lot of the forums.
At Claude’s last symposium at La Sierra University 1993-4?)
In one of the last classes , with Aurturo Sanduval, Claude gave us a “blue print” for his Master Class to be a Certified Instructor of his system.
In it was the actual “big picture “ progression of what material to use, when and the all important to Claude- HOW.
I still have that hand written map, if you will.
I was an active duty Marine musician stationed in Twenty Nine Palms and took one day a month for three years to spend my hard saved $100/ lesson.
Relevant to this topic- my point is this. If one truly took Claude’s instructions seriously and got the “essence” of his life’s approach to it- any method book, exercise series would work if one applied the principals and disciplines to it.
After all, isn’t that what Herbert Clarke did as a young violin player turned cornet soloist?
Those three years transformed my playing experience and gave me the gift of love of playing like I’d never had before.
By the way - my Selmer Claude Gordon .470 serial number is “0729” and I still play on the CG Personal 19 throat mouthpiece he had on the desk on my first lesson when he took my Bach 5B and put it on the floor with the other “doorstops”.
Treasure every mile going and coming knowing I was in the hands of one of the last greats of trumpet playing!!
Honor his legacy everyday with my warmups of “big breath; chest up” stuff |
