I know this has been discussed before, but if you don't mind, I'd like some updated recommendations.
I have a 10 year old grandson who has progressed nicely on piano, and he has the personality to persevere with learning new things. He wants to start trumpet. I have a bunch of horns, but none I'd trust to a beginner child.
I think he can physically handle a Bb trumpet.
I value your recommendations for a first trumpet. I am asking for specific models, please.

I'm sure you'll get many responses, but I would throw in the Olds Ambassador and Yamaha 2320 and 2335 models for consideration. The Ambassadors are well built and durable, making them great for someone who might not always be the gentlest with their horns. The Yamahas are just consistent and reliable, and can be had for reasonable prices used.

Can you do any better than a Yamaha 2330?
You can pick one up on eBay for a couple of hundred bucks, used.

I personally also liked the Bach TR300. There are some that give it a lukewarm reaction. I liked it.

Whatever the case, you do not have to spend much to get a good, used horn
p.s. Unless you know what you're doing and the merchandiser has a good and flexible return policy, do not buy a horn just because it's new and shines nice. (But a good horn that is also new and shiny is a good incentive and don't discount that.)

Another +1 for the Yam 2xxx series horns. Easy to play, easy to find, cheap, and a great way to start. Not much outlay initially is good, in case your grandson doesn't want to continue.

I'd also put in a good word for the Kanstul 700 - great horn that I have used on gigs and it's done well, certainly more than a "beginner" horn. Probably would drop more dollars on one of those though...

Cheers,
Roger

When I was 10, I started out on cornet, switching to trumpet a couple of years later. Perhaps a cornet would be easier to handle by a 10 year old than a trumpet. There seem to be a lot of student level cornets on ebay at very reasonable prices.

I recently found a Yamaha 2320 for a 10-year old and he loves it. Plays it every day and has become a budding star in his elementary school band.

Check your local Craigslist. You can usually find a fine beginner trumpet for $200.

Yamaha 2xxx will be the best.

The King 600 or 601 will likely feel to open for such a small kid.

Bach 300 is also good. More resistance, which will help the small kid.

another vote for Yam student. I've got my 10 year old daughter on one. She was on a 1955 Olds Special which was fine, but heavier than the Yammie.
