I was reading a thread here about the CM Purviance 5*3 and reference was made to the rarity of the CM Purviance 6*3. Just how rare are these mp's?
Thanks!

Purviance mouthpieces are still being made by Bob Reeves. |

I play a new one, made by Reeves and like it very much. It's wider than almost all of the shallow lead mouthpieces, and that seems to help me. |

I am a casual collector of original CM Purviance pieces, and have several. My first one was YEARS ago...I found it (5*K4) lying, new, almost unused in a box of pieces in the back of a music store that I taught privately in a couple of nights a week. Never played it much until about 15 or so years ago, and it grew on me. I finally settled on a 4*D4W for lead work.
As an observation, Purviances are noticeably "brighter" sounding to me than similar sizes in other brands.
Carrol Purviance was a design genius, and interesting character. From what little I have found about him on the internet, he suffered from chronic depression and alcoholism. His numbering system might as well have come from another culture out in the galaxy somewhere...really totally meaningless, in a practical, logical sense. A lot of his rarer pieces were one-off lathe pieces, and I have never found any two with the same numbering that were identical. Often, he would stamp the initials of the person that commissioned the piece on it, and other ones I own have cryptic letters stamped on the shank. One I have was made with a smaller diameter shank, ostensibly to adjust the gap, and has an "S" stamped on the shank. It will not fit all of my trumpets, BTW.
I have two sizes in both trumpet and cornet, and they feel quite different. to me, at least. I have a flugel piece that is my go-to for most playing.
Before the term "efficient" came into vogue for describing mouthpieces, Mr. Purviance was turning out efficient pieces on his lathe.
His mouthpieces are like snowflakes, no two are exactly the same. They have gotten scarcer and scarcer at reasonable prices over the last few years, and I have just about stopped looking for them because, well, I have enough pieces (as do a lot of trumpet players!) and being retired, I have to watch what I spend on gear!
The Bob Reeves copies carry the name, but alas, not the "romance" of the originals, IMO. |

If any are interested, in this YouTube clip, the horn riff you hear at the start of the clip contains me playing on a 4*D4W on a Conn 36B.

Unfortunately two of the posters both fantastic players and great guys are not alive.
I collect them and I have a old one from 70's great lead piece very close to 43ES/69.
