Hey everyone! I have two versions of the Humes & Berg Buzz-Wow mute and I really don't know much about the differences other than what I see. I have one with three resonators on the bottom that are round and smooth and look like a regular kazoo screw-on cap. The other has two resonators that have metal screens and what looks like giant nuts stamped "Appleton". The labels are different shapes too. The one with the giant nuts has a square label with the standard shaped label printed inside of it. The other has a normal looking label but the fonts are little different. Both say East Chicago, IND so I know they don't go back to the Chicago days.

Any ideas about which is older or more desirable? I may send an email to Roger Ingram as well but he has two of my mutes in for restoration and I don't want to keep bugging him about things. Thanks!

So this topic didn't get much response, but as it is the most recent on the topic of Buzz-Wows, I thought I'd bring it back to life a little. I've been looking for a Buzz-Wow for a while now but haven't felt good about pulling the trigger on something I'd never heard that gets so few favorable reviews. But last Christmas I bought a Mel-o-wah. For a dollar, I also bought a kazoo, and as it happens, there's a convenient hole in the end of the Mel-o-wah that allows the kazoo to be placed there. The center tubing of the mute is cardboard, so the fit is tight enough for the kazoo to stay. It's not incredibly buzzy, but it doesn't sound as bad as what I imagine people have been complaining about the buzz-wow sounding like either. I don't think the kazoo changes "the blow" of the mute much since it's basically an open-ended tube. Anyway, I thought it might be a poor man's buzz-wow. I haven't had the heart to plunk down nearly $100 for a used one off eBay. Someone just nabbed one a couple days ago.

I have an older model with the hex nuts. I replaced the metal screen with wax paper and got a more resonant buzzing sound.

That said....I have never used it in a performance. Never any need.
Purely for curiosity's sake.

I used my Buzz Wow on combo gigs when a change of sound was desired. Always turns heads. Mine broke. I thought that I could just order a new one. Wrong! Not availabile.

I'll look for my parts to reassemble.

I have one. I got it about a year ago. It's neat but I've never had a use for it come up. I like the idea of messing with wax paper as a resonator. I'll mess with it.

I love to use it in Caravan and the sheik of Araby and always turns heads when I use it , one of my favourite mutes.

I just managed to snag one. I put new corks on it and repainted the white section cuz I couldn't get the old glue off nicely. Anyone know when they stopped making these things?

For anyone interested, I'm now offering a mute called the Chicago Stinger that's similar to the Humes & Berg Buzz Wow in that it's a kazoo type mute. However, there are a few key differences:

1) The Chicago Stinger was designed to be used with a plunger. It's actually smaller than a pixie mute.
2) People have told me that they prefer the sound of the Chicago Stinger
3) It's being manufactured today and is easy to find & buy

Here's a video of Kenny Rampton (JLCO) playing the Chicago Stinger.
