I'm having trouble with pressure on the trumpet. I have read a number of different theories for reducing mouthpiece pressure, but I don't know which are the best. I'd really appreciate any advice for reducing pressure. Web pages, books, excersise, or advice of any kind is welcome.
Thanks, MM |

While it's far from a complete answer, rather than trying to reduce pressure I'd recommend trying to replace the application of excess arm pressure with something else. Here's a quick list of things that you can try to replace arm pressure.
- breath support
- lip setup
- lip movement
- lip tension
- jaw movement
- tongue movement
- compression
- pivot
Odds are that it will require optimizing more that one of these to successfully reduce the dependence on arm pressure. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

As obvious as this sounds, are you SURE you’re using too much pressure? Excessive pressure absolutely leads to a myriad of problems, but there has to be ENOUGH pressure to create a seal. Look at videos of Doc, Arturo, etc. in the extreme upper register, there’s definitely more pressure being used than in the mid to low register.

A rule of thumb I have is that if you are unable to make a hand vibrato by gently shaking the instrument with your right hand then you are using too much pressure. Try experimenting by holding some notes straight then use hand vibrato. Then play some scales up to some note, pause on it and see if you can hand vibrato. Sometimes it's just getting used to believing you can play high notes without pressure. For the first octave up to C I think of valves doing the work. Above C I think of the tongue doing more of the work. _________________ https://payhip.com/sheetmusicplayalong |
